Quantitative Reasoning (QR) General Education Outcomes: In today’s world, arguments and claims often
rely for support on scientific studies and statistical evidence. Students should possess the mathematical and
quantitative skills to evaluate such evidence. Furthermore, students should possess the skills both to recognize the
quantitative dimension of problems and to use mathematical and logical reasoning to formulate and solve the
problem. Finally, students need strong quantitative and logical skills because they are indispensable in managing
everyday-life situations.
1. Students will demonstrate the ability to evaluate quantitative evidence.
2. Students will demonstrate the ability to use quantitative or mathematical reasoning to formulate
and solve problems.

How do the course goals meet the “Quantitative Reasoning” General Education requirement? How
will this course support students’ achievement of the General Education outcomes for this area?

Provide a brief (one-sentence) summary of how departmental or university assessment activities
affected or support the request to designate this course for General Education.

How will the Quantitative Reasoning requirement be accomplished (describe the assignments and
activities in the class)?

How will the class integrate Quantitative Reasoning as a vital component (e.g. class time devoted to
explicit Quantitative reasoning instruction; regular opportunities for quantitative skill development
distributed throughout the semester; regular opportunities for application/problem solving that
requires quantitative reasoning skills)?

What percentage of the course grade will be based on quantitative reasoning? (Note: Passing work on
quantitative reasoning assignments should be essential to students’ success in the course.) If the work
in this course is graded by someone other than the instructor (or is shared by instructor and teaching
assistant), please explain how quantitative reasoning will be evaluated.

What process is used to monitor/oversee this course if multiple sections are taught to ensure
consistency from section to section and from semester to semester?

Please attach a representative course syllabus (including course description, prerequisites, clear
indication that the course is a “Quantitative Reasoning” General Education course, and course
objectives that include the General Education student learning outcomes), plus a sample quantitative
reasoning assignment and a sample exam.
