Sonia’s Story
. I joined NNCF on May 9th last year. I was just 62 and semi-retired
but did not expect to be with them for more than a few weeks as
exercise has never been my “thing”. So, how is it that one year later I
am not only still with them but planning to take part in their Nordic
Walking Marathon at the end of July.
The North Norfolk scenery plays a big part. I’ve lived here 17 years
but holidayed here since I was a baby. Only in the past year have I
discovered just how beautiful our County is. Our walks take us from
the coast with its rugged scenery and, sometimes, roaring seas, to wide
open fields where the sky is huge: through bluebell laden woods and up
hills where you can gaze down on beautiful villages, their churches and
windmills – often with the sea as their backdrop.
The people play a big part too. The welcome from fellow walkers was
warm and friendly and I now count many of them as friends. We chat
about things serious, or less so. The weather doesn’t worry us because
of the great camaraderie of spirit - one occasion we returned to our
cars after a 1 ½ hour walk in heavy rain, dripping wet and with feet
floating in trainers but full of laughter and a sense of achievement and
peace too.
Sally and Anita have done so much for me throughout the past year.
They aim their exercises at our weakest spots to help us get stronger.
There is never any pressure but their encouragement, gentle persuasion
and complete commitment to getting us fit and healthy is genuine and full
of fun, yet totally professional. I am a year older but I am also 2 stone
lighter and far fitter than I have ever been.

Marathon Preparation
14 Miles
, Sunday 13th April
I started Nordic Walking after joining a beginners
course at the end of last year. I’ve really enjoyed this
novel way of getting fit, so when an opportunity came to
join the 14 mile walk came up, I was keen to have a try.
Not really knowing if I would be capable of going the
distance (the last long walk I did was in my youth) I duly
packed my new sporty belt bag with water & snacks,
donned my (also new) trainers & reported to the
starting point.
We set off from near Priory Maze in Sheringham @ 2
o’clock & headed off towards Weybourne. It was a
fabulous challenge, plenty of time to chat, think, laugh &
take in the beautiful scenery. We stopped to do the
vital stretches now & then, & pressed on at a fair
Nordic pace. From seafront, around Weybourne &
station, back along the edge of the woods, Sheringham
Park, East Beckham then home. Yes achy feet (& other
parts) but amazingly, no muscle pains the following days,
thanks to the stretches en route.
I’m very pleased I did this, & now have a bit more
confidence to face the next challenge…
