Come and have fun exploring arts and crafts projects and discover your creativity! Our curriculum includes
technique development and creative exploration. Students will work on projects, building skills as they take
artistic ideas from concept to creation. We are offering all classes to our OHS Caretaker Members first
with a discounted fee and a deadline date of May 5. After that date, classes will be open to the public.
If you miss the first deadline, the general deadline date is June 20. Payments are due in full at time of

WATERCOLOR WITH EDEE! Plunge Into New Territory – For Beginners
Learn an easy way to plan your watercolor paintings from start to finish. Discover how to include compositions, values,
brush strokes and paint texture techniques, to tips about choosing the right colors to create a strong and exciting piece
of artwork. Class meets two times.

A WATERCOLOR EXPERIENCE! Challenge Yourself – For Intermediate to Advanced
Learn fun new techniques in watecolor painting that will take you to the next level in your artistic journey. Class will
cover how to improve your compositional skills. You will see a difference not only in your work but how you think
when you paint. When you leave this class you will be on your way to creating great work. Class meets two times.

Omena Historical Museum
Edee Joppich has been the owner of Joppich’s Bay Street Gallery in Northport since 1980. For five decades she has
shared her gifts with others through her paintings, teaching, jurying and mentoring inspiring artists of all types. Art
councils, museums, universities and professional galleries have hosted her 49 one-woman shows and her paintings
have been shown in 200 exhibits in regional, national, and international exhibits across the country. Edee has won
numerous awards and honors nation-wide; her work is published in ten art books.
SIMPLY LEATHER! Learn the Fascinating Art of Working with Leather.
Native Americans developed great skills in leather craft before the coming of the Europeans. Come make your own
hand-crafted leather products just like it has been done for generations…we will provide the tools (mallets and stamps);
you choose the items and the designs, and you will have finished key chains, wrist bands, small coin purses, and more
to take home for your personal use or maybe it will be Christmas in July. Your more ambitious choice could be to make
a belt for yourself or a loved one. (Two sessions offered).

Jacquie Johnson puts scrapbooks together for family and friends. The themes are about babies, weddings, vacations,
reunions, boat trips, flower garden, and more. She worked for the By the Bay Scrapbook and Papercraft store in Sutton
Bay for four years and continues to scrapbook and design cards on Monday afternoons at the Omena Fire Hall where
she meets with her ‘scrappy’ friends.

SPINNING THE WIND! Learn How to Make a Whirligig for Your Garden
Popular in the U.S. as early as 1880-1900, whirligigs are also known as pinwheels, buzzers, comic weathervanes, geehaws, whirlyjigs, whirlybirds, or just whirly. Join instructor Dennis Armbruster in this fun class. You will make a
whirligig featuring a woodcutter. You may want to invite a parent or grandparent to take this class with you – a great
bonding memory. Class meets two times. (Two sessions offered).

SIT AND KNIT! Beginning Knitting
Learn to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. Make a beautiful scarf or neck warmer. Great Christmas gifts!!!
Instructors Kanda McKee and Paula McMenamy will contact students prior to the first class with the size of knitting
needles and amount of yarn required. Class meets two times. (Note: times are different).
Materials to bring to class: Size 13 US (9mm) needles and one skein Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in
your color choice, or any yarn that recommends using Size 8 needles on the skein directions; recommend 2 skeins.
Yarn may be purchased at JoAnn Fabrics or Michaels; watch for special coupons online.

Kanda McKee has been knitting and crocheting since she was fourteen. Mostly self-taught she enjoys teaching others
so they can enjoy the same sense of accomplishment that she feels every time she finishes a project.
Paula McMenamy is a former schoolteacher and has also taught classes in several forms of needlework. She started
knitting in high school and has conveniently forgotten how long ago that was.
BELIEVE IN FAIRIES! Design and Build Your Own Whimsical Fairy House
Leelanau is the “land of enchantment,” but you can take that motto to a new higher level when you learn to make your
own fairy houses! Inspired by fairy houses of the coast of Maine and becoming a national craze, fairy houses are
perfect for Omena. We’ve got the best ‘Gnome Depot’ for building materials here in our woods, and the entire village
is chock-full of whimsy! Mary Loveless has been creating fairy house subdivisions in her woods for three years; she’ll
teach you how to start your own. However if you want to sign up, you should start collecting interesting natural objects
that catch your eye – acorns, pine cones, especially beautiful rocks (Petoskey and Leland Blue), pebbles, twigs, shells,
bird feathers, moss, etc. Voila! Find a secret place and invite the fairies into your yard.
Materials: The instructor will email a list of supplies and building materials.

Friday, July 18
Loveless Cottage – 13895 East Ingles Bay Road (off Omena Point Road) where the pink flamingos will greet you.
Mary Loveless lives in Menphis most of the year but finds her heart in Omena. She’s a retired magazine writer and
current free-lance writer with no discernible qualifications to teach this class other than a lifelong affinity for arts and
crafts and a winning way with wire and glue.

HEXAGONS & FLOWERS IN YOUR QUILTED GARDEN! If you can thread a needle you can join Sally
Coohon in her ‘English Paper Piecing’ quilted block class. You will finish a lovely block adorned with six colorful
petals about 3-4 inches each and the skills to make more on your own. Class meets two times. (Two sessions offered).
Materials to bring to class: Please bring a pair of sharp scissors to class.
NOTE: Students must be registered by July 7th so that Sally will have time to put the kits together.

Sally Coohon is the owner of Dolls and More in Northport where she teaches classes among many other things. Sally
has been selling her handwork since she was five years old. She was in the hospital recuperating from a tonsillectomy
when her doctor came along and found her knitting, and commented: “My wife can’t knit as well as that.” He bought
the item from her. Sally’s first sale!
COLORFUL SPIRITS! Coil Basket Weaving in the Tradition of Native American Culture
Join Sarah K. Chenault in a fun and colorful experience using your own selection of yarns and fabrics and learn the
technique of basketry used by Native Americans across North America. Class meets two times. (Note: Second session
offered for different ages)
Materials to bring to class: 20’ of old boat line or other thick rope, at least ¼”-1/2” thick (stiff rope is easier to work
with); colorful t-shirts or other thin fabric of your choice (at least 3-5 shirts o r 3-5 yards of fabric or a ball of yarn);
bring more colors for more design options (check out thrift stores for affordable and colorful fabrics; charms or any
small items that can be sewn onto fabric (like a pendant because it has a loop at the top), and sharp scissors.

Sarah K. Chenault is a multimedia artist from Texas living in Los Angeles and she frequents her beloved Omena as
much as possible. She received her BFA in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis and MA in Latin
American Studies from UCLA. From living abroad in Spain and Colombia she learned the gratification and fun that
came from integrating her creative abilities with cultural studies and has since aimed to use these two in her career.
FROM THE CORNER OF YOUR MIND! Memoir Workshop
The idea of writing your memoir may feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! Learn how to trigger memories and
moments, write them down and turn your unique experiences into a lasting legacy for future generations. Join Nancy
Fitzgerald, author of Take A Twig, as she shares techniques on preserving your life story. No experience necessary.
Please bring a ruled pad and a pencil to this class. Class meets two times.

ON THE FLY! Making A Bird House Replica
Learn how to make a house for our fine-feathered friends who eat on the fly. Join Larry Bensley and Bob Smart in this
three-hour workshop. You will be proud to place your unique birdhouse in a prominent location in your garden. You
might want to encourage a parent or grandparent to take this class with you.

SIMPLY WATERCOLOR! Learn the basics; Love the process (with an Optional En Plein Air Class)
Some consider Watercolor, one of the most difficult and frustrating of all art media. Learn to work with, not against,
this beautiful paint, with simple techniques that allow the watercolor to do what it does best! The sessions will cover
basic composition and techniques reinforced with interactive demonstration and practice (color play!). “In these
workshops I hope to provide and encourage the use of this beautiful, surprising medium as a healing and satisfying
process…painting for the fun of it (Class meets four times)

Format…
In each of the four morning sessions (3 ½ hours), fundamental composition elements and techniques will be discussed,
demonstrated and practiced. Most sessions will be held indoors but, weather permitting; we will try to spend some time
painting outside.
Note: A fifth, optional half-day session will be offered, which will focus on ‘en plein air’ painting, at a nearby
location (weather permitting); TBD. A separate charge will be collected for this additional class depending on
the amount of time.
Materials: A list will be provided to registered participants; with prior arrangement, necessary materials can be
purchased directly from the instructor.

Dawn Russell, artist and owner of Gallery 22 in Suttons Bay, loves ‘teaching’ for the opportunity to share her love of
art with others. She paints primarily in Watercolor and/or Pastel, landscapes, still-lifes, and figurative works, which
appear in public and private collections across the country. She and her family have lived in the Suttons Bay area for

OMENA HISTORICAL MUSEUM SUMMER PROGRAM POLICIES
Program Registrations. The parent or legal guardian must complete application form for class participants
under age 18 as well as a ‘Consent Form’ found on the bottom of the application form.
Payments are Due in Full at Time of Registration. Payment must be by check made out to the Omena
Historical Society Summer Program; please do not send cash. Only completed registrations that are mailed with
the tuition check will be processed to secure a spot.
Class Confirmations. Confirmations will be sent by email upon receipt of your registration. If your requested
class is full, we will contact you shortly after the receipt of your registration. We will do our very best to place
you in your alternate choice class. Please complete and bring your confirmation letter on the first day of
class for check-in.
Withdrawal/Refund Policy. Cancellations must be made one (1) week prior to the start of the class. Refund
checks take two weeks for processing. No refunds will be processed after the class has
begun.
Cancellation of Classes by OHS. In the event the OHS must cancel a class due to a lack of interested
participants, a full refund will be provided unless you have an alternate class choice. See application.
Pricing. Pricing is listed as OHS/member (discounted) and Non-member. If you wish to become a Caretaker
Member at the time of registration, we will honor the reduced fee for OHS members. See registration form for
categories.
Materials Fee: When there is a materials fee indicated, the students shall pay the instructor directly on the first
day of class.
Waiting Lists. Waiting lists will be formed and maintained after the class limit has been reached. As spots in the
class become available, persons on the list will be contacted in order and offered an opportunity to register in
the class.
Classes in “High Demand”. Most instructors will add another section if a class is very popular.
Arrival/Departure Times. Please do not bring your child earlier than the start time of class and pick them up
promptly at their designated pick-up time. We are not responsible for children dropped off at OHS outside of
actual registered time.
Class Cancellations/Minimums. Most classes require a minimum number of enrolled participants. If the
minimum is not reached, cancellations will be made 1-3 days prior to class start date.
Dress Code. Wear clothes than can be easily washed for those classes that can be gritty. Children must wear
shoes that fasten to their feet; sandals must have a heel strap. NO FLIP FLOPS! This is for your safety.
Photos. OHS volunteer photographers take photos of programs and events. Names are never used in marketing
materials. We do not tag individuals in online media.
Emergency Contact Information. Please see section for Parent/Guardian Information on the application form.
NSF Checks. A $25 fee will be charged for any check returned due to insufficient funds.
