Self-Management and Goal Setting Exercise
Introduction:
After completing the questionnaires on intra and interpersonal skills, you are to set your goals and aim at improving one
of the skills throughout the period in MGTC90. This should be chosen out of the 5 skills taught in class (self-esteem, selfcontrol/self-regulation, self monitoring, social skills, attitudes toward authority). This exercise aims to assist you on your
journey in becoming a leader in the modern business world. We will illustrate the process with the behavior “Speech
Characteristics – Maintain Conversation” that you were assessed by your classmate during the “Performance Feedback
Role Play”.
Speech Characteristics: Maintains conversation -- attentive to relationship with employee, responsive to employee,
seeks consensus.
Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG):
A Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) is a strategic statement which is created to focus an organization on a single
medium-long term goal (Collins & Porras, 1994) This would be your overarching goal on how you want the skill you have
chosen to be ideal. Example of a BHAG for the above behavior is as follows:
BHAG: To be able to connect with people through verbal communication in different settings
SMART Goals:
SMART Goals are goals that are SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ATTAINABLE, RELEVANT and TIMELY (Doran, 1981). Setting
SMART Goals would be of priority in enhancing the skill chosen as they would act as milestones and allows you to
compare your improvement based on a benchmark you have set at the beginning of the program. An example of a good
smart goal is as follows:
Item to improve upon: Speech Characteristics – Maintain Conversation attentive to relationship with employee,
responsive to employee, seeks consensus.
SMART Goal: In the following month, I would get to know my teammates more by having at least a 10 minute
conversation with them at least once, and know more about them as a person.
Specific: at least 10 minute conversation
Measureable: Yes at least one 10 minute conversation per team members, all team members
Attainable: Seems reasonable. Abundant opportunities
Relevant: Yes, since maintaining conversation is key to having people like talking to you, and getting to know the other
person. This is relevant as it directly forces me to maintain a sustained conversation.
Timely: In the following month. (Time Bounded)
When you set your SMART Goals, please be sure that you can demonstrate that it meets the 5 criteria.
This would be the most critical part in your assignment as you would have to track your progress based on the SMART
Goals you have set here. Moreover, this would contribute to your final paper in this course.
