Terms
Some common terms are:
Alien - a citizen of another country.
Ancestor - a person from whom you descend; grandparents, great-grandparents.
Ancestry - denotes all of your ancestors from your parents as far back as they are traceable.
Archives – A government office which hold info & is open to the public & free. You may need a card
for these services – it is free as well.
Assisted Passenger Lists – Arrived into Australia with government help.
Brick wall – Cannot find information about an ancestor after checking out all possible known
resources.
Census – info about a population. (Also, can be called muster, detailed household forms)
Indexes – List put together manually of basic information (names) in a list format to search.
Living documents – Many times documents you use will be called “living” because they will keep
changing just like a person!
Probate – A set of documents which will give the executor named in the Will the right to wind up the
deceased's affairs and distribute the funds to the named beneficiaries.
Unassisted Passenger Lists – Arrived into Australia without government help – paid by self/family.
Abbreviations:
abt – about
BDM – birth, death, marriage
FAG – Find A Grave
? – Not sure or do not have information.
