Herefordshire Archive Service – Events Winter and Spring 2016
Herefordshire Archive Service is initiating a series of workshops and lectures designed to promote
the wealth of collections available at Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre. The events are run
by our knowledgeable staff, and are designed to aid your research. They will include information on
our archival holdings for each record type and the historical context for their creation. Although
these events will be angled towards Herefordshire, the information learnt should be relevant to
other English and Welsh counties.
All events must be booked in advanced and are held at Herefordshire Archive and Records Centre,
unless otherwise stated.

Introduction to House History
Many people today are fascinated by the past life of their homes. Through the use of documentation
available at your County Record Office, this course provides advice on how to begin your
investigations. The records required for this research will be analysed in turn, from medieval
manorial court rolls to 20th century planning applications.

Records of the Parish Chest
Do you wish to find out about ancestors who lived before the introduction of the census and civil
registration?
Do you wish to know more about the history of your village?
Parish churches played an important role in the life of local communities in days gone by and kept
many records; including many you would not necessarily associate with them. These records can
shed light on local events and people in the past. This workshop will introduce you to the different
roles the parish played in local life, the types of records that we hold in our parish collections here
and type of information they contain. By attending, you can become more confident in exploring
these records for yourself.

Crime, Courts and County Administration – A look at Quarter Sessions Records
From the late 14th century until 1889, The Quarter Sessions records form the basis of much local
history research. The documents concern crime, land, licensing, the militia, county rates, roads and
bridges, taxes, religion, social welfare, policing, lunatics and a host of other subjects. This seminar
looks to explore these disparate series of records within the Herefordshire County and Hereford City
Quarter Sessions, and analyse their potential research uses.

Records of the Poor Laws
Poor Laws were originally introduced in England in 1601 and the administration of them created
records about people for whom there are often no other records. This workshop will guide you
through the records of the Elizabethan Poor Laws and after the 19th century reform of the poor laws.
You will learn about the records created by the workhouse system and how to find the relevant
records for the people and places you are interested in.
