2. JOB PURPOSE
In conjunction with Senior Nurses set up and maintain an efficient stock control system,
contributing to the enhancement of patient care and environmental standards.
Support and assist the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Multidisciplinary Team in procuring new supplies,
requisition of stock, considering stock management constraints.
Ensure availability at all times of appropriate supplies to agreed levels.
On occasion as situations dictate it may be required that the post holder assists with general
duties.
3. DIMENSIONS
1. The post holder will work within the ICU as a support worker, their main focus being stock
control.
2.
ICU is funded for 7 level 3 patients and contains provision for 8 patients.

5. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT
The Intensive Care Unit has 7 beds, which cater for emergency and elective admissions with
single or
multi-organ failure. These include conditions which are respiratory, cardiac, metabolic, hepatic,
renal neurological, trauma, acute poisoning, paediatric and maternity.

6. KEY RESULT AREAS
1.
Monitor appropriate stock levels for Sterile Store and other storage areas within the theatre
suite, ensuring appropriate levels of stock are maintained and ordered.
2.
Knowledge and effective use of e procurement for the requisition of stock.
3.
Procurement of non-stock items, identifying appropriate suppliers as directed by the Stores to
achieve best value compatible with optimal suitability of product.
4.
Assist in monitoring the complete supplies process, identifying delivery problems and taking
action to ensure continuity of availability of stock.
5.
Ensure authorisation for emergency Pecos orders.
6.
Receives and checks deliveries and notes any discrepancies or irregularities and takes
appropriate action.
7.
Follows set stock management processes and rotation of stock monitoring expiry dates thus
promoting effective use and levels of stock.
8.
Ensure cleanliness and tidiness of storage areas in line with Control of Infection policy.
9.
Participate in annual stocktaking.
10. Daily access of satellite store room out of the Theatre department.
11. Ensure clinical areas are stocked.
12. Run general errands when requested to by senior nurse.
13. Assist with moving patients and their belongings between and within wards.
14. Assist with answering the door and telephones.
15. Ensure that all faulty equipment is reported and appropriate documentation filled in.
16. Carry out mattress audits.

8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK
1. Is line managed by Senior Charge Nurse.
2. Workload is generated by the work of the ICU and is reviewed and directed by the Senior Nurse.
3. To be able to ensure continuity of supplies in conjunction with Senior Nurse.
4. Works with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to assist with the smooth running of the
ICU.
5. Is expected to anticipate problems and requirements for the effective management of stock in
the department.
9. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
1. Review, monitor and maintain stock levels.
2. Stock existing items required and gain agreement by Senior Charge Nurse.
3. Implement change of agreed suppliers or items in conjuction with Stores.
4. Awareness of cost and quality, reporting to company and Supplies Officer any quality issues
raised by staff.
5. Prioritise delegated workload.
10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB
1. To be cost effective yet deliver a quality service.
2. To manage such a large amount and variety of stock on a daily basis.
3. Post holder constantly deals with conflicting demands and is therefore expected to prioritise
tasks appropriately within existing deadlines.
4. Ability to work under pressure of continual interruption from telephone and enquiries.

11. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
1. Communicates verbally, fax, email and written.
2. Liaises with all members of the multi disciplinary ICU team.
3. Communicates with suppliers, medical representatives and other hospitals.
4. Directs finance to either e Procurement or NHS Supplies department regarding invoice price
discrepancies and assists where necessary.
5. Communicates with e Procurement Department to provide up to date information regarding price
changes and additions/deletions from catalogues.
6. Communicate with other wards and departments.

1. Frequent hand washing.
2. Daily moving of boxes when delivered areas / dismantle and disposal of boxes.
3. Daily unpacking of delivery boxes and storage of items.
4. Daily access of satellite store room out of the Theatre department.
5. Lifting and moving of mattresses.
6. Transfer of patients and belongings on beds/chairs within area and other wards.
7. Walking, standing and moving and handling.
8. Stretching, twisting, turning and bending while undertaking daily duties.
MENTAL DEMANDS
1. Requires tact/diplomacy/negotiation skills to cope with multidisciplinary colleagues competing for
time priorities.

2. Frequent interruptions requiring post holder to multi task and prioritise.
3. Demands caused by multitasking, frequently having to change direction and by coping with the
varying personalities making up the multidisciplinary team.
EMOTIONAL DEMANDS
1. Dealing with emotional effects of distressed and anxious patients and relatives.
2. May witness distressing circumstances.
ENVIRONMENTAL:
1. Occasional exposure to verbal aggression / violent behaviour and challenging behaviour.
2. Constant exposure to hospital environment, e.g. unnatural light, dry conditions.
