Description of the Initiative (in less than 10 lines), including, as appropriate elements on size and
scale of the initiative:
Analysis of 20 standards and labels for the food sector and their relevance for
biodiversity protection taking into account the main drivers of loss of
biodiversity and the efficiency of existing criteria. The baseline report
confirms that most of the standards – especially quality standards of the
industry – have a high potential to improve biodiversity protection.
Elaboration of recommendations for the improvement of biodiversity
performance based on the conclusions of the baseline. The recommendations
focus on standard policy and standard criteria and include criteria for
biodiversity management as well as criteria for “very good agricultural
practice” to reduce impacts on biodiversity.
Currently, analyzed standards have been contacted again in order to offer
support for the improvement of standard requirements. Furthermore, a
proposal regarding biodiversity training of certifiers and assessors and
capacity building for certified farmers has been developed.
In a second phase, the initiative will focus on the implementation of training,
the realization of pilot projects testing the recommended measures and the
elaboration of a simple but meaningful monitoring system which all standards
should join.
Results: Baseline Report regarding the biodiversity performance of 20
standards and labels for the food sector. Recommendations for biodiversity
criteria in standards and labels for the food sector.
