Consolidated School District of New Britain
New Britain, Connecticut
ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE
Number:
REGARDING: Guideline for Food Service
Charges on Student Accounts
4-11
Approved: June 16, 2014
______________________________________________________________________________
The New Britain Public School District participates in the National School Breakfast and Lunch
Program. Both meals meet and or exceed the current USDA Guidelines for nutrition. The lunch
meal includes; fruit, vegetable, grain, meat/meat alternative and milk. The District recognizes
that a healthy nutritious meal plays an important role in the readiness and ability of students to
learn. For this reason the District has established a policy to provide for a clear and consistent
approach to meal account procedures while treating all students with dignity in the serving line.
The District believes that it is the adult parent or guardian’s responsibility for the payment of
meal charges and it is our desire to engage in positive interactions with both the parent and the
student when a meal account is not current.
Methods of Payment
The District will accept payment for meals upon purchase in the form of a check, money order,
and cash or through the on-line service Mylunchmoney.com. Mylunchmoney.com is a service
which allows parents to view their child’s balance, view a history, and arrange for funds to be
deposited into your child’s lunch account.
Students paying for their meals on a daily basis will be required to pay for their school lunch
then the school will apply any change to the student’s outstanding account balance. (Please note
that no change is given to students) Students will be required to have money in their account or
with them to purchase an extra meal or a la carte items.
Charging Policy
Elementary & Middle School Students
Elementary and Middle School Students are allowed to charge their meals until their account
balance reaches -$20.00. When a student’s negative account balance is at -$10.00 or more a
notice of negative balances will be run weekly and sent home to parents for immediate payment.
Students who exceed the credit limit of a -$20.00 balance will be given an alternate lunch and
their account will be charged for the alternate lunch. An alternate lunch consists of a sandwich,
vegetables, and milk.
High School Students
High school students should NOT have a negative balance in their account at any time. An
alternate lunch consisting of a sandwich, vegetables and milk will be provided to students who
do not have money to pay on a given day. The lunch will be charged to their student account but
the account may not exceed a negative balance of $-20.00
Opting Out
Parents who wish to have their child opt out of the school lunch program may do so by
completing a form and sending it to the Board of Education. Once the form is on file, students
will not be able to charge meals though they will be able to purchase meals from the cafeteria
with cash. This form will be kept on file for one school year with a grace period of 30 days into
the next school year. After the 30 day grace period students, without an updated form, will be
considered a part of the school lunch program and required to comply with the districts lunch
policy.
Balances at the End of the Year
Accounts with outstanding negative balances must be paid prior to the end of the year. Parents
are responsible for contacting the Board of Education in the event their child has relocated to
another district to make arrangements to pay the balance on their students account.
Seniors with outstanding account balances will be required to pay the balance in full before
school transcripts are released.
Cafeteria Staff Training
Cafeteria staff checking students out at the register will be trained yearly to ensure privacy and
appropriate response to students who are only eligible for an alternative lunch.
