III. Guidelines for the Evaluation of Strengths and Weaknesses
Consider the following elements and fill in the strengths and weaknesses of the library collection for
each Dewey range listed on the rubric (pages 4 & 5). Remember, NOT ALL apply to each Dewey
category. Peruse the shelves, spot check books, check e-book/digital, and gain a general, overall
impression of the material.
Physical condition of books: are the bindings torn? dirty, frayed unattractive cover?
Attractiveness/Appeal: quality of pages? are they yellowed, torn, dirty?; are there colorful,
appealing illustrations?
Format: print size; layout of text, illustrations, quality photographs, sidebars – is the overall look
clear or confusing?
Text Features: index? bibliography? glossary? websites? other resources?
Curricular relevance: does the subject correlate with current curriculum?
Reading level: does the reading level correlate with curricular subjects and student needs?
Special focus needs: is there material to support a focus such as Art or English Language
Learners?
Language: is there a need for material in Spanish and other languages? Are there 5 Spanish
language titles per student for identified ELA-S classrooms?
Content: author qualification-content consultant? poorly written? incorrect information? coverage of
material not balanced? sexist material? material displays cultural bias?
Ethnic/Gender representation: do careers represent women and ethnic groups? are the
biographies about white (dead) men? are biographies of the living current?
Cultural responsiveness: who wrote the book—male, female, dominant culture, non-dominant
culture? How are women treated in the book? How are non-dominant cultures described?
Cultural diversity: do different areas (Arts, Literature, Science, Fiction) reflect world cultures?
High interest material: can popular demand be met?
Appropriateness: treatment of subject matter is suitable for age level?
