Earth’s Crust and Resources Assessment
Science 7
1. Describe the impact on the environment and on society of past and current
catastrophic geological events. Describe the scientific understandings we have of the
movements and forces within the earth’s crust. Include diagrams with your written
answer.
Hint: Include topics such as:
 plate tectonics,
 volcanic activity
 earthquakes,
 mountain building
 crust, upper and lower mantle, core, inner core
 diverging boundaries, converging boundaries, transform boundaries
 tsunamis
 seismograph, Mercalli intensity scale, Richter magnitude scale
(EC7.1)
2. Identify locations and processes used to extract Earth’s geological resources.
Examine the impacts of those locations and processes on society and the
environment. Include diagrams with your written answer.
Hint: Include topics such as:
 rocks, minerals
 color, hardness, streak, lustre, cleavage
 potash, gold, diamond, salt, uranium, copper, graphite
 open pit mining, underground mining, solution mining
 satellite imaging
 core sample drilling,
 mine tailings
 pipelines
 resource depletion
 water quality
 urbanization
(EC7.2)
3. Investigate the characteristics and formation of the surface geology of Saskatchewan,
including soil. What links are there between surface geology and land uses (past,
present and future)? Include diagrams with your written answer.
Hint: Include topics such as:
 sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic
 fossil record
 rock cycle
 mechanical, biological and chemical weathering
 erosion
 water holding capacity
 color, odour, texture, organic matter, pore size, sand, loam, clay
 agriculture
 urban development
 recreation
 road construction
