Youth Mini Grant Application
FUNDING FOR PROJECTS LED BY AND FOR YOUTH IN EAST OAKLAND!
Are you a youth between the ages of 14-24?
Do you have an idea for a project to benefit East Oakland?
Do you need funding to make it happen?
Total Funding Available: $15,000
Grant Award Amounts: Up to $2,000 per project
Application Due Date: May 1, 2015 by 5 p.m.
Eligibility Requirements
Only complete applications (no sections left blank) will be considered for funding.
Youth mini grant projects must:
 Be located in East Oakland (High Street to the San Leandro border, MacArthur Boulevard to the water).
 Be led by a youth ages 14 to 24 who live in or go to school in East Oakland.
 Benefit youth ages 14 to 24 in East Oakland.
 Be sponsored by an organization, public school or church that can act as a fiscal sponsor.
 Have a designated staff person from the sponsoring organization, public school or church as an
advisor.
 Be completed by September 30, 2015.
Desirable projects will:
 Have a positive impact on the community.
 Involve community members.
 Address Peace Promotion, Healthy Neighborhoods, Youth Employment, or Health Promotion.
 Incorporate the use of social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Tumblr, etc.).
How to Apply
Application submission:
 Mail, fax or email completed applications by 5 p.m. on May 1, 2015.
 Provide proof of a valid taxpayer ID number of the sponsor organization, public school or church.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What happens after I submit my application? Staff will review every proposal to ensure applications
are complete. If the application is incomplete, staff will contact you. All complete applications will be
submitted for review to the Youth Leadership Board.
2. How do you decide whether or not to fund a proposal? The Youth Leadership Board makes all
decisions about grants. After an application is submitted, the Youth Leadership Board will review
applications and conduct interviews to see what projects best fit the funding criteria.
3. When do I found out if my project was funded? The Youth Leadership Board takes about a month to
review all applications, interview and make final funding decisions. Your project will usually be
contacted within two weeks about an interview. Two weeks after the interview, you will be informed of
the status of your application. Note: this is a rough estimate. Depending on the amount of applications
received, the process may be longer.
4. How should we prepare for an interview? Make sure you know your project well and be prepared to
answer questions.
5. What types of projects are you interested in funding? We look for projects that will: improve the
health of youth in East Oakland; have a positive impact on the broader community; involve community
members; and/or address Peace Promotion, Healthy Neighborhoods, Youth Employment, or Health
Promotion.
6. If I live outside of East Oakland can I apply for a grant? Our program is meant to serve the youth of
East Oakland.
7. When is the deadline for applying for funding? Applications are due May 1, 2015 by 5 p.m.
8. Can we fax or email applications? Yes. You can fax your completed application to 510.444.4819 or
email it to youth@eastoaklandbhc.org.
9. Where does the Youth Leadership Board get funding for the mini grant program? The Youth
Leadership Board is funded by East Oakland Building Healthy Communities.
10. Can I get assistance with completing the application? Yes. You may call the Youth Programs

Instructions:
1. Please complete the BUDGET WORKSHEET to provide a detailed breakdown of your funding
requests. You must also provide explanations for each of your expenses. The worksheet breaks down
funding requests into the following categories:





Stipends: pay given to youth who are youth leaders/involved in the planning and implementation of
the project.
Materials and supplies: items needed to complete your project such as office supplies,
decorations, equipment, copies of flyers and handouts.
Facilities: rental fee for venue or space used to hold meetings, events.
Honorarium: fee paid for something done professionally as a service that your team cannot
provide such as: speaker, performer, etc.
Food and drink: anything purchased that you can eat or drink.
2. Provide an explanation on why each item is needed in your budget.
3. Please also list the priority (most important to least) line items in your budget. We can’t always give you
all the money you’re asking for, so we need to know what is most important to you.
Other Guidelines:



Expenses that cannot be funded include: adult staff wages/salaries, administrative fees and
overhead costs.
Funds cannot supplement existing program budgets.
Funds will only be provided for new or additional programming that is led by youth.
