S sections: Speaking, Listening & Grammar

This is a textbook list for evening classes – S sections.
S sections (TTh in Fall and Spring, MW in Winter) are classes that emphasize Speaking,
Listening & Grammar (SLG). Faculty teaching S sections can choose from:
a) Integrated Skills textbooks already leveled for our program, preferably. These books
are very communicative and have more grammar built in.
b) A second possibility is a Speaking and Listening text already leveled for our program.
Most likely you will need to supplement with grammar.
A few tips to help make your life easier:

Please check with other faculty who are teaching at or near your level before you order
a textbook. While sharing a textbook is fine (see below), unplanned duplication of
textbooks in different level classes isn’t. You can find this quarter’s and previous
quarters’ textbook orders on the main page of the ESL Faculty Website, just below the
schedules.

Ordering the same textbook for both R and S sections is not a good idea. Students are
not required to take classes all 4 nights a week, so dividing up a text book over 4 nights
is logistically difficult to say the least.

If you want to share a textbook with another teacher, it’s best to coordinate this with a
teacher who teaches on the same evenings as you. For example, if you teach 021S, you
might share a text with 022S. (Many of the integrated skills texts are large and would
work well for splitting in SLG classes.)

There are class sets of Life Skills and Test Prep (1 – 4) available for you to use to
supplement your class with Life Skills and CASAS competencies. If you find your book is
lacking in Life Skills, please use as you see fit! More info here.

Please see the Evening Grammar Matrix for specific grammar points assigned to RWG
and SLG sections.

If you want to choose a book that is not on the list below, please get a copy of the text
to the program coordinator so that it can be leveled and added officially to our
departmental textbook lists before you order it.

Texts with an asterisk (*) have been used recently and are highly recommended.
