Dear parents and students,
Windy Gap is just around the corner and we are very excited about it! Our speaker is Matt Hamm,
associate pastor at Hope Community Church (PCA) in Charlotte, NC. Matt’s other claims to fame are that
he was a scholarship football player at The Citadel, worked on the Clemson football coaching staff, but
most of all he is a loving husband and a wonderful father of three beautiful little girls.
This is one of those letters that you can post on the refrigerator and refer back to. It contains all the
useful information about the trip that you are going to want as you get ready, as well as the phone
number while we are there. Should you need it, the number for Windy Gap is 828-645-7187.
On Monday, the 17th of August, the entire high school is going to load up on buses and head to Windy
Gap, a Young Life camp outside of Weaverville, NC. All students should be in front of the worship center
at 8:15 a.m. We will spend Monday and Tuesday nights, and return by 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August
19th. All meals while on the trip are provided. In order to help you pack, the following lists are given:
What to bring:
 Bible
 Sleeping bag or XL twin sheets. Windy Gap provides beds with a pillow/blanket.
 Towels and washcloth
 Toiletry items
 Sun block
 Money — there are drink machines and a canteen that will be open during free time.
 Swimsuit (appropriate, of course: for ladies, one-piece; for gentlemen, Bermuda-length).
What not to bring:
 Electronic devices including cell phones/smartphones, laptops, iPods/iPads, MP3 players, video
games, etc. These items will be confiscated for the remainder of the trip if used by students.
 Food. Keeping food in the cabins invites unwanted guests (of the bug and rodent kind). There
will be enough food served at Windy Gap that there is no risk that anyone will be hungry.
The dress code for Windy Gap is a relaxed form of the school dress code. Appropriate t-shirts and shorts
of modest length will be allowed. For space reasons we ask that each student only brings one suitcase.
You will find the permission form for the trip, as well as the BLOB permission form on the high school
page found under the Academics tab of the CDS website. Please fill these out and return them to the
school by Friday, August 7th, so that we are not scrambling for them in the eleventh hour.
For a student to be able to take medications while at Windy Gap, it is essential that the parent AND
physician fill out the MEDICATION AUTHORIZATION form on the Health Room/School Nurse’s page of
the website (located by following the link on the HS forms page) and bring this form, along with the
medication, to the table at the front of the buses the morning of the trip. (Note – this form will also serve
as permission for medication while at school after the retreat as well.) A teacher will be responsible for
administering the medication at the appropriate times while at Windy Gap. It should also be noted
that CDS hires a certified nurse to join us at Windy Gap for medical care as needed.
Please pray for God’s provision as we prepare this retreat. Begin to pray also for the works and wonders
that God has prepared for us while on the retreat.
