March Madness

Can you believe that we are two-thirds of the way through the school year?

Because there will be so much going on during the first week of March, I am sending out the March newsletter a little early. First, the Read-in will be taking place on Monday, March 2 nd . Next, we will be going on our field trip to the Math/Science Nucleus on Tuesday, March 3 rd . Finally, representatives from the Sun Gallery in

Hayward will be coming to the school on

Friday to teach an art lesson to the 2 graders and the 7 th graders. nd

As March continues, we also will be looking forward to the Science Fair and the

“…Beauty and the Beast” field trip. March activities will end with the 2 nd graders leading prayer on March 27 th .

Read-a-thon

The Read-a-thon began on Friday.

Please encourage your children to read even more than they have been. There are many incentives for them to read during the Read-athon, including a pass to Six Flags Discovery

Kingdom if they read for 360 minutes. We are hoping for 100% participation from the entire school so that we can have a school-wide picnic at Weekes Park.

2 nd

On Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Monday, March

, the students may wear pajamas to school for the Read-in. They can also bring in pillows, blankets, etc. Most importantly, they must bring in enough books to read all day long.

Also, the children do not need to bring in a snack on Monday. There will be a special breakfast treat.

At the end of the Read-a-thon, please help your child add up the pages and hours read, collect the pledge money, and sign the reading logs. Then turn them into school.

First Communion

The children have experienced their

First Reconciliation, and now they will begin preparing for First Holy Communion. There is one more important date for preparation for

First Communion. It is Monday, April 20 th at 6:30p.m. in the church. Each child should be accompanied by at least one parent or guardian. At that time, we will have a brief rehearsal for First Communion and give out last minute information. Please bring your

Communion banners to the rehearsal.

Lent

We have begun the season of Lent. The children made Lenten promises in order to prepare for Easter. While some of the Lenten promises involve “giving up” something, many of the sacrifices involve “doing” something.

Please encourage your children to remember their Lenten promises. As the 40 days of Lent go by, it’s easy to be tempted to stray.

The 2 nd graders are enjoying learning about the Lenten season as they prepare for

Easter. Ask your child about Holy Week.

During Lent, we will also be participating in the

Stations of the Cross every Friday afternoon at

2:00p.m. Please feel free to join us if you can.

Field Trips

Mrs. Barton’s Classroom Newsletter Page 2

Thank you to all of the parents who have volunteered to drive and/or chaperone on our upcoming field trips. The children wouldn’t be able to enjoy these experiences without you.

Our two March field trips are set. We will be going to the Math/Science Nucleus in

Fremont on March 3 rd . The students should wear their uniforms on Tuesday. There is a small gift shop, so please send money (no more than

$5.00) with your child if you would like him/her to purchase something. Then we will be going with the kindergarteners and 1 st graders to

Ohlone College to watch Our Lady of Guadalupe

School’s performance of “The Tale of Beauty and the Beast” on March 26 th .

Book Reports

The children should be working on their

Dr. Seuss character book reports. This was a short assignment, but one which the 2 nd graders can handle. They should be prepared to read aloud a couple of pages to the class on March 2 nd during the Read-in.

There will be another book report that the students will be responsible for completing before the end of March. They will be bringing home the information about that book report soon.

We’ve Got Talent

Auditions for our annual talent show will be taking place on March 26 th and 27 th . Sign ups will take place on March 9 th . If your child would like to share his/her talent, this will give him/her the opportunity be well-prepared for the auditions. The talent show will be on April 24 th .

Classroom Supplies

Many of the students are low on their school supplies. We still have one more trimester, so please ask your child if there are any supplies that he/she needs. It is important that the students have all of the necessary supplies as we head into the final stretch of the school year.

March Mathness

You have probably noticed that the students have been bringing home some interesting homework problems in Math. The common core standards encourage the students to use a variety of strategies to solve the math problems. The 2 nd graders are actually demonstrating the ability to choose strategies that best help them. When helping your child with his/her homework, ask your child to explain the strategy that is being used. There are usually examples in case they forget. The 2 nd graders are ready to move into 2-digit addition and subtraction.

Reading Adventures

Many of the second graders have become avid readers. They earned well above the 3 required

AR points for the second trimester. As we move into the 3 rd trimester, the students are going to be challenged to read some higher-level books. This will prepare them for third grade.

We will be completing our reading unit, which has focused on the community. The students will be working on an ancestor project based on one of the stories that they will be reading. More information about the project will be sent home in the next couple of weeks.

Science Fair

The second graders will be represented at the Science Fair on March 18 th -19 th . They will be receiving information about the projects next week.
