Several things took place between the years 1832 and 1833. There was the Turtle Bayou Resolutions, which was a letter written by Texan leaders stating they were not revolting against Mexico but were in support of Santa Anna since he wanted to restore Mexico to the federal system set up by the constitution of 1824. There was the Law of April 6, 1830 that put several restraints on Texans: immigration from the U.S. into Texas was stopped, further slaves added to Texas was halted, land could be seized by the Mexican government, convicts were used to build forts and could live in Texas, and Texans couldn’t live adjacent to the U.S. In light of what was taking place in Mexico, a letter was drawn up at the Convention of 1833 where Texas wanted to be a separate state, resume immigration, etc. Later, Stephen F. Austin traveled to Mexico City to talk about changes in Texas with Santa Anna. Austin was sure that Santa Anna would grant statehood, so he asked Texan leaders to write a state constitution. Santa Anna did not accept the idea of statehood. Stephen F. Austin was placed in jail for over a year without being charged. After his release, he had lost any hope he had for peace in Texas. He felt the only recourse was war. Sample Written Response (Weak): There were certain things that led to the Texas Revolution.
