CMA CGM in Massive CO2 Slash
CMA CGM, the world’s third largest shipping line, has announced a 50% improvement in its CO2
performance for its owned fleet.
Thanks to an efficient environmental policy, this success was accomplished in 10 years, with a carbon
emission reduction of 50%.
The French liner has announced the achievement in time for COP21, a major environmental
conference due to take place in Paris on December 7-8, 2015 in a bid to bring together the world’s
leaders in sectors that include government, business and finance to support the establishment of a
greener economy.
In today’s market place, a container emits approximately 60 grams of CO2 per kilometre, compared
to 120 grams in 2005The group’s best-performing ships emit 37 grams of CO2 per container
transported, such as the CMA CGM Bougainville which can carry up to 181,000 tonnes of goods in
18,000 containers.
CMA CGM has been able to reduce emissions through the installation of new bulbous bows in order
to adapt the hydrodynamics of its ships.
Its propellers have also been optimised to gain efficiency, following the decrease in engine power:
their diameter has been increased and a blade removed.
A new twisted leading edge rudder improves water flow and thus the hydrodynamic performance of
the vessel.CMA CGM’s ships are also equipped with a ballast water treatment system (which is
helpful to the ship balance).
Before being discharged, they are cleaned from any living organism that could impact marine
biodiversity.CMA CGM currently develops and uses new environmentally friendly containers, which
save 1 to 2 tonnes of fuel per day, and thereby preventing emissions of 2 to 5 tonnes of CO2.In 2005,

CMA CGM was the first maritime group to invest in containers with bamboo floors, thus limiting the
use of wood from valuable tropical species while improving the containers' technical qualities.
CMA CGM’s fleet of 470 vessels call at more than 400 ports in the world, on all 5 continents. In 2014,
they carried 12.2 million TEU.
