School Climate Survey
The purpose of the school climate survey is to strengthen our system and our
individual schools by celebrating our strengths, acknowledging our weaknesses and
planning the next steps to ensure positive learning and working environments for
everyone.
Data from the student, staff and parent surveys conducted in the spring of 2015
indicates:
The majority of respondents feel welcome in our school and feel accepted by other
students and staff at school. They feel like they can get help at school and they like
participating in school activities. The majority of students shared that they had at
least one friend at school and that they feel safe while at school and on the way to
and from school. The majority of students reported that they have not
bullied/harassed others, nor have others bullied/harassed them. They feel like there
are healthy activities at school.
A large number of staff participated in the school climate survey. Their findings
coincide closely with the student survey results that students feel welcome at the
school, have friends and feel safe at school. Staff communicate that students need
more assistance in accessing support and resources at home.
A small number of parents responded to the parent survey (13). These parents
communicated that the majority of parents feel welcome at the school. Most feel
that the school communicates well with parents and that their children feel safe at
school. While most parents believe that the school provides an excellent learning
environment that meets the academic needs of students, only 66% communicate
that the school provides extracurricular activities for students.
The survey results demonstrate a need to review:
While the majority of students indicated that they feel safe at school, we have noted
that some students feel less safe in unstructured areas of the school.
Likewise, while the majority of students indicated that bullying/harassment is not
taking place at our school, a smaller percentage of students indicated that some
forms of bullying have taken place once or twice.
It is clear from the parent survey that extracurricular opportunities should be
communicated more clearly to parents.
As a result of the school climate survey we will:
Staff will continue to diligently supervise areas such as the school playground and
lunch rooms.
As part of our character education at school, we will continue to teach our students
to report any forms of bullying witnessed. As part of our “… do the knight thing”
campaign, we will continue to maintain our focus on treating others with kindness,
caring and acceptance. In addition, we will continue the focus started this year on
Growth Mindset and positive thinking. Extracurricular opportunities for students will
be more clearly communicated to parents using the school newsletter with a focus
on upcoming extracurricular programs.
