Country Show Day Handbook
2014
Kaipara Flats School Country Show Day is a good old fashioned Country Show
Day. It's a really special day that has been held annually for over 65 years. The
day is a real experience where you feel the flavour of our community and the
school. It's all about our children with their lambs and calves and a great way for
the community to get together. It is usually held on the first Saturday in Term 4.
This years date is Saturday 18 October, 10.00am to 2.00pm at Kaipara Flats
School.
Lamb and Calf Rearing
Our children can rear a lamb or a calf.
Lambs will be judged in two sections - Junior: Year 1-3 children and Senior:
Year 4-6 children. The top 2 lambs in each section will then compete for
Champion and Reserve Champion Lamb. The Morison Cup is presented for
champion lamb.
Calves are generally judged in one group, depending on the number of calves
entered. The top 2 calves will compete for Champion and Reserve Champion calf.
The Rosebowl is presented for champion calf.
There will be ribbons for first, second, and third lamb and calf in each section as
well as for the champion and reserve champion lamb and calf.
The categories judged are grooming, rearing and leading.
Sorry, no dogs as there can be problems for the other animals.
Fundraising
Our school also uses this day to help raise funds for the school. This year the
funds will be going towards the completion of the classroom upgrade project and
for continuing to purchase junior readers for our school reading programme.

How You Can Help
Set up and Pack Up
On the Friday, before our Country Show Day, after school, we need help with
setting up for our Country Show Day. The more people that can help with set
up the better.
After our Country Show Day on the Saturday we need help with packing up.
Country Show Day Stalls
During our Country Show Day the stalls need people to help run them. Each
stall has a person in charge who will let the other people know what to do. We
will require all families to help on the stalls. A roster will come home with all
parents assigned to a time on a stall and what time to be there. It’s very
important that we all share the responsibility to help with the running of the
stalls and not leave it up to a few people. The stalls can be closed while the
Rearing, Leading and Grooming Competition for Lambs and Calves is going on.
Just take your stall money with you if being left unattended.
Devonshire Teas
The PTA members bake scones for the Devonshire Tea stall; these are bought
into school on the Saturday of the Country Show Day. We need help with
preparing the scones for the stall.
Cake Stall
We ask that each family bake a cake/biscuits/sweets for us to sell at our Country
Show Day. A plate will go home during the week leading up to our Country Show
Day. We ask that cakes are bought in on Friday 17 October or on Saturday
morning and placed on the table outside the office.
Raffles
We ask that each family bring in some grocery items for our to main raffles that
will be drawn at our Country Show Day. We ask that the grocery items are
bought into school during the two weeks prior to our Country Show Day and
placed in the basket outside the office.
Donations
Through out the month leading up to our Country Show Day we will be asking
for donations for raffles, bric-a-brac, plants and produce, Quick-fire Raffles etc.
These items can be left at the school office and stall organizers will collect and
sort items for their stall. Watch the newsletter for when to drop off your
donations.

Kaipara Flats Show Day
Livestock Information Sheet (Calves)
Lambs and Calves are accepted for judging at Show Day. It is important the
following guidelines are observed so judging can be carried out fairly.
Animals selected should be born on or after 1st August for entry into
Kaipara Flats School Show Day.
Further guidelines and helpful information regarding care and training of your
calf should be viewed on the website www.lic.co.nz.
Calves
Calves less than one month old do not need to be tagged. All other calves
must be tagged to compete on the day.
Calves will be judged in the following categories:
Leading – required to be led with the calf on your right hand side, around a
square marked out with pegs, complete a full turn round one peg and halt
when requested. The judge will be watching your calf to see how obedient
the calf is and how relaxed it is on the lead.
Rearing - The Judge for this class will look at the calf to tell how well it has
been reared. The calf, of course, has to be well behaved and stand still to
allow the judge to run his/her hands over its body. The judge will be looking
at the calf to see if it is a good example of its breed. The judge will ask
questions about the calf – its name, when it was born, what breed is, and
feeding routines.
Grooming – You must present the calf in spotless condition:

coat clean and thoroughly brushed so there are no loose hairs
or dust
 feet clean – remember to wipe any earth from its hooves
 clean around the outside of its ears clean around its nose and
eyes
 clean halter and rope.
The calf has to be well behaved and stand still to allow the judge to run
his/her hands over its body.
There is no requirement to produce a portfolio but children
may keep an optional diary if they wish.
Dependent on the number of calves entered, the Board reserves the right to divide the entries
into smaller groups according to the ages of the children – (i.e. junior and senior classes).

Lambs
Lambs will be judged in the following categories:
Leading – the judge is looking to see your lamb walk happily alongside you
on your right hand side, without pulling back. You need to train your lamb to
do three things on the lead – to walk forward alongside you on your right, to
turn when required, and to stop. At Show Day you will be required to lead you
lamb around a square marked out with posts, turning a complete turn around
one of the posts and halting.
Rearing – To compete in the rearing category, lambs must have their tails
removed and be castrated if male (a wether). The judge is looking for a
healthy, vital lamb, with good weight gain and condition. Lambs should be
kept clean HOWEVER YOU MUST NOT WASH YOUR LAMB. The Judge will
test the lamb’s wool for lanolin. The judge is looking for a lamb that is a good
example of its breed. You will be asked questions about the lamb’s date of
birth, (age), feeding, breed and how you have cared for it.
