Communication Arts Instructional Coach
South City Preparatory Academy is seeking Instructional Coaches who demonstrate a
strong desire to work with an academically rigorous college preparatory curriculum and have a
belief that all students can achieve at the highest levels. All staff are expected to support the
mission of the school and must actively participate in professional and school-wide activities.
Experienced candidates must demonstrate a track record of exceptional student performance.
Candidates without teaching experience will be evaluated based on past leadership experiences,
participation in extracurricular programs, academic performance and a “no excuses” attitude to
teaching.
South City Prep’s Communication Arts Instructional Coach (CAIC) will provide instructional
support and coaching to staff members to ensure that each student is able to reach his or her
academic potential. The IC’s primary role is to work with CA teachers to support best practices
using data, provide analysis of school-wide trends in instruction and make recommendations about
potential next steps to address areas of need. The CAIC will teach one to three periods of CA in
addition to coaching duties and intervention work with specific student groups.
Responsibilities:









Support CA teachers in the design of units and lessons for the development of their year
long curriculum.
Observe instructional delivery and provide feedback to enhance and support the
development of each CA teacher’s content area.
Analyze data in order to modify curriculum and forms of assessments to meet students’
needs. Specifically, the CAIC will work closes with the DC to monitor RTI implementation
and services.
Work with academic staff in the school (other instructional coaches, DCI, SPED Director)
to support sharing of best practices.
Serve as a coach to CA teachers by providing expert advice on improving and enhancing
individual lessons and units based on ongoing analysis. This will include, but is not limited
to:
o
Reviewing lesson plans, unit plans, and assessments
o
Observing classroom instruction and providing analysis and feedback.
o
Providing instructional strategy best practice training, as needed.
Plan instruction appropriate to subject, grade level, and abilities of his/her students.
School grade levels will be 5th-8th grade.
Be willing to be a 12-month employee with no extended summer break.
Assist teachers in creating and organizing classroom rules, procedures and routines in a
highly-structured school culture.
Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional learning and improvement through the
planning and implementation of Professional Development workshops for the instructional
staff.









Manage student behavior to ensure student learning.
Establish a culture of high expectations, diversity, cultural sensitivity and understanding.
Maintain ongoing communication with students and parents about the students’ level of
academic progress and/or deficiencies by playing a key role on the school’s RTI team.
Analyze qualitative and quantitative student data; use this data to drive instruction and to
differentiate instruction.
Complete all assignments in a timely fashion.
Passionate about teaching in a socio economically and ethnically diverse urban
environment.
Must be willing to bring a positive attitude to important and difficult tasks and commit to
direct and clear communication when misunderstandings and conflicts arise.
Possess and entrepreneurial spirit, be flexible, willing and able to play different roles at the
school, and go above and beyond to meet the varied and constant needs of the students
at South City Prep.
Responsible for maintaining the school’s library, Accelerated Reader program and school
wide reading initiatives.
Qualifications:




BA/BS in Education, content area or related field, valid teaching certification, successful
classroom experience in an urban environment.
Strong record of helping students achieve academic success, primarily with minority and
low-income students.
Significant experience with communication arts curriculum development, daily lesson
planning, and teacher coaching.
At least 3 years of communication arts teaching experience required.
