2014 Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships
King’s College London would like to invite applications to the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship
scheme. Each year the four Arts and Sciences Schools support a limited number of applications.
Those who are successful will join a vibrant community of postdoctoral research fellows at the
College who have been supported through this and other external and internal competitions in
recent years. The College is fully committed to supporting the scholarship and career development
of these fellows who will each be assigned an academic mentor and will be fully integrated into the
life of the Department.
Internal selection process
The College operates a two stage internal selection process. Each Department has been allocated a
quota of candidates who they are able to put forward for final selection by Heads of Schools and VP

Action
The call officially opens on 2nd January 2014, however applicants should start
preparing their application before this date as application material has already
been published (http://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/funding/ecf/ecf.cfm ).
Applicants should submit applications to the relevant Head of Department.
Heads of department (or nominated lead) assess applications and choose
applicants (within quota) to put forward.
Heads of department forward selected applications (within assigned quota) to
researchofficestrand@kcl.ac.uk with the chosen applications ranked and with a
brief summary of the reasons for support , a brief summary of how the selection
process was made and a brief summary of the source of matched funding.
Departments make applicants aware of their decision.
VP Arts & Sciences and Head of Schools assess nominated applicants and make
final decisions on applications to go forward to the LT.
Applicants made aware of final decisions and successful applicants are given
feedback and invited to make full applications online:
https://grants.leverhulme.ac.uk/Login.aspx
Applicants should make referees aware that they will need to provide referee
statements at this point.
Successful applicants submit their forms online (at which point it goes to the
Head of Department to complete their section of the form). Applicants also
complete and send RGA form to the School Research Development Manager for
approvals.
Head of Department completes section of form with details about the relevance
of the applicant’s research to the department, the facilities and resources the
applicant will have access to, the applicant’s starting salary, and the source of
the matching funding.
Head of Department submits to the Research Grants and Contracts Pre Award
Office for institutional approval having completed nomination statement for
candidate.
Leverhulme application deadline. Institutional approval given by this date.
Note that Institutional approval is required both from the head of the host
department and from the relevant Research Grants and Contracts Pre Award

Candidates must submit their application for consideration by Departments by 12pm on Friday 17
January 2014. Applications should be submitted to the relevant Head of Department. They will

application, chosen applicants must submit their online application by 12pm Thursday 20 February
2014. At this point you and the Head of Department will receive notification from the Leverhulme’s
online system. The Heads of Department had been asked to approve the applications (see below) by
12pm Thursday 27 February 2014 at the latest. The College’s Central Research Grants & Contracts
office will then need to provide institutional approval for the application before the Leverhulme’s
deadline of 4 pm Thursday 6 March 2014. If your Head of Department is not able to approve the
application between 20-27 February, s/he will contact you directly to agree an earlier mutually
