3RD QUARTER 2014-15
The majority of the counselors and social workers attended a presentation by Sian Beilock,
author of Choke. The presentation focused on learning to work with your brain by using
strategies that can help both children and adults perform their best under stress.
Brian Drelicharz, Social Worker, attended a seminar at Adventist Glen Oaks Therapeutic Day
School to learn about programming offered to provide more effective transition services as
students return to Hinsdale Central.
Claudia Kelly, Social Worker, attended a seminar at Adventist Glen Oaks Therapeutic Day School
to learn about programming and services available to support the social, emotional, and
academic growth of students transitioning to Hinsdale Central.
Kari Hein, Counselor, attended four sessions at College of DuPage to network with colleagues
and to learn about new programs.
Lisa Hikes, Counselor, attended a committee within IACAC that examines professional
development opportunities regarding College and Career Counseling for school counselors.
Attended the University of Chicago Counselor Academy to review updated information
regarding admission procedures and program changes. Attended IACAC Government Relations
Committee Meeting.
Mike Litton, Counselor, met with University of Kansas admission counselors and listened to
updates on college admission criteria. Visited University of California - Berkley, University of
San Francisco, San Francisco State, Stanford, University of California - Santa Clara, San Jose
State, University of California - Santa Cruz, California Polytechnic State University - San Luis
Obispo, University of California - Santa Barbara, Pepperdine University, Loyola Marymount
University, California Institute of Technology, Occidental College, Pomona College, Harvey
Mudd College, Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, University of Southern California,
University of California – Los Angeles.
Gia Maniscalco, Counselor, attended the University of Chicago Counselor Academy to review
updated information regarding admission procedures and program changes. She also attended
a counselor breakfast to gain updated college knowledge for the ACM School Consortium
(Beloit College, Carleton College, Coe College, Colorado College, Cornell College, Grinnell
College, Knox College, Lake Forest College, Lawrence University, Luther College, Macalester
College, Monmouth College, Ripon College, St. Olaf College).
Teri Marshall, Counselor, attended the University of Iowa event to gather updates regarding
admission requirements, to meet and greet with admission representatives, and interact with
current students. Teri also attended the Georgia Tech “Counselor Fly-In” event in Atlanta,
Georgia with fourteen other counselors from USA and abroad. She learned about changing
admission trends, available programs and financial aid. Additionally, Teri toured Emory
University and met with admission representatives. Furthermore, she attended the University
of Chicago Counselor Academy to review updated admission information, speak with current
students, attended an essay writing workshop, and participated in an official campus tour.
John Mariner, Counselor, attended a University of Iowa event to learn about updates for
admission requirements and network with admission representatives and current students.
