Attention: Sports Coordinator / Chess Administrator
NORTH WEST RAND JNUIOR HIGH SCHOOL CHESS LEAGUE
League Rules:
Thank you for your commitment to the Junior Chess League. The league rules have not
changed since last year and as follows:













Each team is to consist of 4 players in Grade 8 or 9
Each player will play two games against the opposing team, except for board 4
where a reserve may play the second game
If your school is short of a player, than the boards need to be filled from board 1, so
that the player from the opposing team on the last board will be awarded the game
point
Schools are encouraged to organize their board order according to player strength,
and as far as possible to maintain this board order for the entire league. However, in
the case of a player being absent for a match, all players may move up a position so
that the reserve plays on the lowest board.
All players of the home team must play white in the first round and in the second
round all the players of the visiting team must play white
In the first round each player will compete against the person from the opposing
team that is the same board number as they are (i.e. Board 1s play each other and
board 2s play each other). In round 2, each player will compete against the player on
the opposing team that was initially on the board next to them (ie Board 1 of the
home team will play again board 2 of the visiting team)
There is to be a single time control of 15/15. That means that each player has 15
minutes on their clock and the entire game will take 30 minutes. If a player has used
up his 15 minutes than he/she has lost on time, provided that their opponent has
enough pieces left on the board to checkmate.
The school hosting the match is to provide clocks for every board. Schools may
borrow clocks from the visiting schools (by prior arrangement) if insufficient clocks
are available.
A game is scored 1 for a win, ½ for a draw and 0 for a loss.
Fide rules of 2005 apply
Any player found guilty of a chess irregularity or receiving assistance, will forfeit
his/her game
The final results of the league matches and play-offs will be determined by individual
game points and then match points if required
The school mentioned first will host the match

A suitable day during the relevant week needs to be agreed upon by both schools.
The host school should contact the visiting school as soon as possible in order to
make these arrangements
Please take careful note of the following points:




Results need to be entered on the result sheet that has been sent together with this
information. Result sheets need to be scanned and emailed (or faxed to me )to me
by both schools at the end of each week
The league sections have been organized in apparent school strength according the
league results from last year. There will be no need for play-offs because the results
from the “A” Section will determine the league winners. This year’s league results
will determine which section your school’s team is in next year.
Please inform me if your opponent for the week has cancelled the match and I will
give your team full points. Any school that forfeits one of their matches will not have
their teams’ results counting for the league positions. The team may still play their
remaining matches but this will only be considered a friendly match and all
opponents will receive full points against them.
Any results not received by the end of the season will not be taken into account for
final placements in the league.
I hope that it is a very enjoyable season for all and please do not hesitate to contact me with
any queries.
Regards
