Chinese Specialised Texts
PROF. MAO WEN
COURSE AIMS
The study of specifically selected texts mainly will enable us to highlight “China
from the Western perspective” in order to familiarise the student with the business
and political strategies adopted by Western countries for the Far Eastern nations,
with special emphasis on the business aspect (observing and understanding both
the judgements and the positions of the Chinese on these issues).
COURSE CONTENT
The texts dealt with in class will mainly refer to international communication, the
new media, globalisation and online language. The selected texts will be used to
show the student the changes and the evolution that have occurred in the Chinese
language through contact with other Western languages.
READING LIST
The didactic material and the texts to be analysed will be indicated in class.
TEACHING METHOD
Lectures.
Students should search the Chinese internet, newspapers and magazines to find material
and texts on the different aspects of the Chinese world and the international scenario, such
as political, economic-business, scientific, cultural, topical, geographical, and newsworthy
cases, etc. The student will then select from that material the articles that interest them the
most. Each text chosen must be composed of at least 800 characters. In class, the students
will take turns to present the material collected and then discuss it with the lecturer and their
classmates.
ASSESSMENT METHOD
Oral exams: each student should prepare at least eight articles, each of which must have
no less than 800 characters. Around midway through the course, the student will hand in the
articles to the lecturer for review. During the exam, the lecturer will chose at random one or
two of the eight articles selected and use them as a basis for the student’s oral exam. The
student must present the content of the article and respond to the lecturer’s questions in
fluent Chinese.
