November 10---Subtracting Integers

Bell Ringer: Using pictures or words, explain how to solve the following problem:

(-3) + (+8)

__ Program Review

Learning Target: I can subtract integers using a variety of strategies.

Teaching Strategy Used :

1) STAR growth recognition/ updating STAR score chart in Interactive Math Journal

2) Khan Academy Video —subtracting integers (students will use active listening and stand or sit when they hear the word opposite, difference or integer)

3) Direct Instruction/Modeling in Building subtraction problems with integer chips.

4) Guided practice solving only subtraction problems with integer chips (hands-on for kinesthetic learners)

Essential Questions of the Day : How can I subtract integers?

Assessment :

Bell Ringer: Think-Pair-Share Describe the 2steps for using integer chips to solve subtraction problems. Here is an example problem to help -2 - - 8=

Learning Target : I can subtract integers using a variety of strategies.

Teaching Strategy Used :

1) Review previous day’s lesson/having students model under the ELMO camera using math vocabulary.

2) Students will work with a partner to practice several subtraction problems. They will use integer chips. In efforts to fade from concrete to pictorial representations, they will be required to illustrate their integer chips on a graphic organizer.

3) If time permits, students will choose a problem that they have “become an expert on” and teach the class on the ActivBoard.

Essential Questions of the Day : How can I subtract integers?

Assessment : completed graphic organizer

Bell Ringer: ******GATES FAL pre-assessment (temperature changes)

Program Review

Learning Target: I can subtract integers using a variety of strategies.

Teaching Strategy Used:

Rotation/Center Day (2 20 minute centers)

Teacher Center —We will work on “Keep Change Change” Subtracting integer rules.

We will use graphic organizer that serves as a procedural checklist for re-writing the problem in plastic sleeve protector with dry erase markers.---students will compare and contrast this method to the integer chip method

Technology Center —Students will practice adding and subtracting integers on various websites posted on my teacher website. They will have to record a minimum of 15 problems they complete on a graphic organizer to ensure on-task behavior.

Essential Questions of the Day: What strategies can I use to subtract integers?

Assessment : 4 question exit slip

Bell Ringer: Look to see who your activity partner is, gather needed materials from back table.

Program Review

Learning Target :

I can add and subtract integers.

Teaching Strategy Used :

***GATES FAL ( TEMPERATURE CHANGES —USING POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE

NUMBERS IN CONTEXT) http://map.mathshell.org/materials/lessons.php?taskid=453&subpage=concept

Based on results of pre-assessment, students will be homoygously partnered up.

1) whole group discussion of guiding questions (derived from pre-test)---scripting student responses to leave posted

2) warm-up activity (human number line)

3) introduction to task (cards/procedure)

4) work time

Essential Questions of the Day: When will I use integers in real-life?

Assessment :

Bell Ringer: Get with your partner from yesterday and get out your needed materials from back table.

Learning Target: I can add and subtract integers in real-world scenarios.

Teaching Strategy Used:

In cooperative groups based on pre-assessment data, pairs will continue to determine temperatures of various cities using the skill of adding and subtracting integers.

Upon completion of activity, students will complete post assessment. They will have access to their pre-assessment and corresponding guiding questions to match their comments will be posted.
