Big Blue Banner
Objective
Students will generate words that start with the /b/ sound (e.g., blue).
Target words and phrases

Materials
 Big sheet of blue butcher paper
 B graphics or objects
 Paste, glue, or tape
 Black, blue, and brown markers
State and model the objective
Say, “This is our Big Blue Banner. Today we’re going to celebrate the /b/ sound by decorating our Big Blue
Banner with things like bows and buttons and bees. We’ll also get to write with blue, black, and brown markers
all over our Big Blue Banner. As we do, listen for more words that start with the /b/ sound.”
Identify and emphasize target words and phrases within an activity
 Work together with the students to attach objects or pictures of things that begin with the /b/ sound to the Big
Blue Banner.
 Use /b/ words to discuss what you are doing with your students as you attach the graphics or objects.
Read target words/patterns introduced in the activity
 Have students use the black, blue, and brown markers to write their names on the Big Blue Banner.
 Have the students recall the /b/ items they put on the Big Blue Banner, and list them on the board.
Write about the activity using target words/patterns
 Write the following prompt on the whiteboard: “I put a ____ on the big blue banner.”
 Have the students write the different /b/ items they placed on the Big Blue Banner in the prompt on their own
sheet of paper.
 Have the students share what he or she wrote with another classmate.

SEEL AT HOME
Playing to Learn
Goal: Generate words that start with the /b/ sound (e.g., blue).
You will need:
Items in folder: blue construction paper, B picture cards
From home: additional objects or pictures of things beginning with the
letter B (optional), tape or glue, black, blue, or brown marker
Activity: Big Blue Banner
1. Help your child attach B picture cards and objects to the blue construction paper to make a Big Blue
Banner.
2. As you attach things to the Big Blue Banner, help your child learn the /b/ sound by repeating words and
phrases throughout the activity (e.g.; “You made lots of beautiful bows on the Big Blue Banner. Our Big
Blue Banner is brilliant!” etc.).
3. Using a blue, brown, or black marker, help your child write names that begin with the letter B on the Big
Blue Banner.
4. Send the Big Blue Banner to school with your child to share with a teacher and a friend.
Remember to be playful and have fun!
The activity can be repeated several times.
