Full Description of Task #1
The Monster Truck Company has requested 3 possible ramp designs to be submitted. They have provided the coordinate points of the
starting point of the truck and the launch height and want to know the length of the incline ramp. (Handouts for Student A, B and C)
•
Each student will receive their handout with coordinate pairs for the starting point of the truck and the launch height.
•
Using graph paper, each student will plot their assigned points on the coordinate plane and draw the ground distance (in feet)
from the truck to the launch and the height (in feet) to launch to create a right angle.
•
Each student will then determine the length of the lines they have drawn (which are the legs of their triangle).
•
Using the Pythagorean Theorem, each student will calculate the length of the incline ramp for their given dimensions.
Scoring Guide Task 1
Advanced
 Meets all of the "Proficient"
criteria plus:
 Using the distance calculated for the
incline ramp and the launch height,
verify the accuracy of the ground
distance from the truck to the launch.
Proficient
 Correctly draw and label the ground
distance from the truck to launch and
the height to launch.
Progressing
 Meets 2 of the "Proficient"
criteria
Beginning
 Meets fewer than 2 of the
"Proficient" criteria
 Correctly identify the length of the
ground distance and the height to
launch for their given coordinates
 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to
determine the length of the incline
ramp (showing all work)
