Quantifying heterogeneous tumor cell populations has been one of the major challenges in understanding
tumorigenesis and improving cancer therapy. We have developed a whole cell electrical impedance
spectroscopy microsystem and utilized it for analyzing metastatic and non-metastatic head and neck
cancer (HNC) cell lines. The device successfully differentiated two different HNC cell lines, the nonmetastatic 686LN and the metastatic 686LN-M4e that were derived from the same parent cell line. We
expect that this system will provide a powerful tool for future detection and quantification of cancer cells
from various tumor stages, and offer a platform to examine the effect of drug therapies on cancer cells or
to customize drug therapies for cancer cells.
