Description of the program and recent activities:

The GLOBE Program in the Czech Republic started in 1995 and we celebrate 17 th anniversary this year. The official guarantors are the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of the Education.

TEREZA Association is the national coordinator. TEREZA cooperates closely with GLOBE Scientific

Board which consists of 11 experts from different areas of science. These experts help with training workshops, developing new teaching materials, PR of GLOBE within universities, at GLOBE Games.

More than 140 schools currently join the GLOBE Program in the Czech Republic; half of them are high schools. Every year we organize several training workshops for schools – some of them are also available for older students. New schools receive the basic equipment for their measurements at the first workshop. We also support schools with methodical materials for teachers and worksheets for students in Czech language. We started to develop the new version of methodical materials three years ago in connection with changes of Czech school curriculum. Four parts – hydrology, land cover, phenology and soil are completed, the remaining parts (atmosphere and introduction) will be finished hopefully till the end of this year.

Theme of the year:

1) Atmosphere 2010/2011

Last school year we focused on advertising Atmosphere because we wanted to prepare teachers and students for GLOBE Student Research Campaign on Climate. Every month we asked students to take

photos of particular type of cloud and do special atmosphere investigation. Students received feedback from us and meteorologist to their outputs. We published a cloud poster and field guide of clouds where we have used their photos. We also placed all the photos with notes to our web page.

2) GLOBE Student Research Campaign on Climate 2011/12

This school year we wanted to highlight GLOBE Student Research Campaign on Climate. We prepare

4 special workshops and worksheets to engage students in this campaign. Every 3 months we announced special tasks in close connection to campaign. We consulted the outputs of schools with scientists and placed them on web. We are also planning to use the outputs for short ppt presentation that can teachers use for advertising second year of the campaign at the beginning of the next school year.

The projects aimed at Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE)

Last year we finished our project “Towards Science and Research” which aim was to introduce IBSE into Czech classrooms at High Schools. We developed methodical materials in close cooperation with scientists and GLOBE schools. Student teams worked on their own research project. They were encouraged to follow the steps of the scientific process starting with the research question, hypothesis and resources, then choosing the method and design of investigation, data collecting and analysis, drawing conclusion and finally presenting the results. The project offers learning activities where the topics such as Soil, Plants and Carbon Cycle meet together as a field for the training of scientific process skills. The webpage: http://www.projekt3v.cz/

This school year we have started new project “Explorers” which aim is to develop methodical materials and train teachers in IBSE. The target groups are the elementary schools (students from the age of 9 to 15). We cooperate with scientists and GLOBE teachers within this project and plan to share the outputs among all GLOBE schools in the Czech Republic.

Tree Ring Project

The Tree Ring Project is a twoyear study that uses tree rings in order to determine an environment’s climate in any given year. The project, organized by GLOBE Country Coordinators Karl Torstein

Hetland (Norway), Diana Garasic (Croatia), and Tree Ring Project Manager and Assistant Country

Coordinator Ilona Krpcová (Czech Republic), is collaboration between 24 schools from their three countries. From 5 – 8 October 2011, the first of three workshops involved in the project took place in

Baška, Croatia. Two teachers and the principal from each school took part in the event, bringing the grand total of this successful endeavor to 85 participants. The next workshop will be organized in

Pisek, Czech Republic in September 2012.

GLOBE Games (GG)

This year we celebrate 15 th anniversary of GLOBE Games in the Czech Republic. In connection with it we have announced the topic of GG “We rolling it together already for 15 years!“

We consider the GLOBE Games one of the most effective long-term methods of motivation students and teachers in developing GLOBE at their school. GG is a 4 day long meeting of GLOBE students and consists of these main parts:

GLOBE festival for public where students exhibit and explain various activities and GLOBE measurements

GLOBE students conference where teams of students present their project to GLOBE community

GLOBE field game where students teams explore the surrounding area, do measurements and team activities at study sites.

Teachers conference

TEREZA Association has now hosted GLOBE Games in the Czech

Republic for 15 years in a row, about 250 students from 35 schools from CR and 40 students from abroad participate every year. This year GLOBE Games took place in the town Litomysl (May 4-7) and the team of TEREZA was preparing the event in cooperation with the High School and the Town of

Litomysl. http://www.globegames.cz/english.html
