Journal Entry 1
I have watched my two oldest children go through college, both have now graduated, having
had many instructors disconnected with them and the other students in their class. These
instructors would not give time after class to assist the students with their homework concerns.
My youngest son finished his sophomore year at the University of Michigan, and I continue to
observe this same disappointing, non-supportive attitude from some of his instructors. Good
teacher relationships with students whom foster positive educational relationships create an
environment in the classroom to be more conducive to learning, meeting each student’s
emotional, developmental and educational needs. Three years ago I made it my passion for
getting my master’s in nursing in order to give this positive and supportive relationship to my
students in the classroom I would finally be teaching. I want to be able to give each my students
the guidance and support they need in order to attain high levels of achievement and to promote
their interest to learn in the classroom. So, I see my nursing role in five years as a nursing
instructor in a nursing program specializing in oncology at a university, or at a hospice home
care corporation.
The knowledge, skills, and competencies I will need to obtain to achieve this five year goals
begin with the completion of my MSN. Already practicing in a clinical setting, I have learned to
anticipate expectations and changes, designing organizational programs preparing each of the
nurses to meet those challenges. I will need to refine the planning of educational programs for
staff with diverse levels of ability to learn, through my courses at the University of Phoenix. I
need to improve my skill in developing and managing budgets, and learn to exercise debate for
support and resources at an organization where education may not be the primary mission. I

want to develop my skill in helping students and practicing nurses identify their strengths and
limitations, their learning needs, and help the student/staff select learning opportunities that will
build their strengths and overcome limitations. My goal will be to provide a positive teacherstudent relationship by interacting with my students in a respectful and responsive manner, offer
students help in achieving social and educational objectives, and help students to reflect on their
learning and thinking skills.
Other areas I will concentrate in developing my skills and knowledge will be engaging in
research, writing grant proposals, maintaining clinical competence in my clinical organization to,

I will investigate in authoritative sources of
information, as through the National Institute of Health and become more familiar and educated
in the process of grant writing over the next five years. Over the next year, I will begin interning
with a college who has experience with conference speaking; facilitating to smaller, satellite
groups at conventions; finally, working towards large conference presentations.
The next five years will be challenging as I finish my MSN at The University of Phoenix
and with other educational commitments in order to preparing for my goal as a nursing instructor
in a nursing program specializing in oncology at a university, or at a hospice home care
corporation.
