Nigerian Tribal Chief in Palmdale
by Hannah Lugo, Cassie Tidwell, Raul Palacios, Laiza Palacios, Jose Garcia, Jose Ojeda
Coyote Claw Daily
Mr. Sunday Dunkwu was born and raised in Nigeria in the Ibo tribe. He was named “Sunday” because he was born on that
day of the week. In Nigeria, it is very common to be named after the day of the week on which you were born.
Working daily to get your Cactus news
When he was younger he was going to be chief, since he is the oldest and only son in his family. He didn’t want to be chief,
so he came to America. Instead, he came to the United States when he was 24 years old. He came here to go to college. He
went to Henderson College in Arkansas.
He didn’t want to be chief of his tribe because it was a type of responsibility that he didn’t want. If he were to be chief,
everyone, including poor people, would have to give him respect, and that means they would have to give him food, evern
though they are struggling to feed themselves.
Once here in the United States, Mr. Dunkwu met and married his wife and together they have two sons. He is really happy
with his family. His best advice to us is to listen to our parents.
The Best Dance Teacher
by Angel Palma and Bre’aun Brown
Ms. Woley started our school dance
team because she wanted kids to do
something fun after school. It isn’t her
first experience with dance. She studied
dance when she was eight and she has
also taught cheerleading. Our dance
team’s first competition is coming on
March 10. They will compete against 6
other schools. It’s not too late to join—
Ms. Woley needs more boys to join the
team. See her in room 6 if you would
like to join.

Mr. Mitchell: An Amazing Author
by LaPorsha Warren and Jennifer Divas
You would think that being a school teacher is enough, but
not for one of our school’s history teachers. Mr. Mitchell
has written and published a book and is planning to do
more. The name of his book is Lost in Shelikof: An Alaskan
Family’s Struggle to Survive.
The Shelikof is a strait in Alaska. It is named after Grigory
Shelikov. He is a Russian fur trader who founded the first
Russian settlement in what is now Alaska at Three Saints
Bay on Kodiak Island in 1784.
His book is about a family who struggles to survive in the icy
waters of the Shelikof Strait in Alaska. They were missing
for 60 hours. This amazing read is available on
Amazon.com.
Comic Art Contest!
Dear Fans (and everyone else who reads the newspaper):
I’m having a contest!! Do you want to be in my next comic and in every one after that? Write a letter to the editor describing your
character and draw a picture of how it should look. When the March issue of the newspaper comes out, I will show the original drawing
and my version of it. Remember, it doesn’t matter how well you draw; it depends if your character goes well with my comic strip. The
author/illustrator of the winning character will receive a treat!
Yours Truly,
Hannah Lugo
Coyote Talk
Dear Coyote Talk:
It’s almost Valentine’s Day and I don’t have a boyfriend. My friends have boyfriends and are talking about what
their boyfriends are going to get them for Valentine’s Day. I feel left out and alone. What should I do?
Help me,
Lonely at Cactus
Answer:
Dear Lonely at Cactus:
You don’t need a boyfriend to be happy. You’re not the only one without a boyfriend for Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day is not only about having a boyfriend. It’s also about friends. Enjoy the friendships you have and
celebrate them. Don’t waste your time being sad—you’ll find someone.
Sincerely,
Coyote Talk

Seahawks vs. Falcons
by Darron Briggs
In the first quarter, the Falcons were up 7 to 0. As the game kept going, the Falcons’ defense exhausted the
Seahawks. At the end of the first quarter, it ended with Falcons 10, Seahawks 0. The second quarter went by fast
with few events. Late in the third, the score was Falcons 27, Seahawks 0. But here came the Seahawks right before
the quarter ended. The Seahawks quarterback scored, making it 7 for them. Then, early in the 4th, they caused a
fumble and it was a down field touchdown, giving the Seahawks 14. Falcons fought back, going all the way down
field just to be intercepted. They returned that for a touchdown, making it 21 to 28. Then seahawks get the ball
back and score putting them up by one. Things got down to the wire, but, in the end, Falcons took it 28 to 30.

Facebook Editorial
by Vannessa Perez
I honestly don’t know why you people go on Facebook. What’s the point? It is a waste of time. If someone posts a
picture on Facebook, they get lots of comments. However, if they post it on Instagram or Tumblr, no one says
anything. It doesn’t make sense.

Super Bowl Countdown!
by Eli Martin
The Super Bowl is coming up February 3 in New Orleans. I want to let you guys know my upcoming
predictions for Superbowl 2013. In the AFC, my team pick is the Baltimore Ravens. I think the
Baltimore Ravens are going to win because Ray Lewis, who is a player on the Baltimore Ravens and he
just came back from an injury and is well-rested. In the NFC, I think the 49ers are going to get a chance
because they have been on a 6-1 season run this year. They have a nice chance.

Disaster Preparedness at Home
by Laiza Palacios, Raul Palacios and LaPorsha Warren
Being ready for a disaster is important, so we asked teachers around Cactus to tell us how they prepare for
disasters at home.
Mr. Myers, P.E.: He makes sure he has food and water. He also has propane gas for his camper. That will give
him a place to cook. He’ll also have a refrigerator full of Twinkies. He also wants soccer balls and to make sure his
kids know how to turn off the gas and know where to get help. He will stock up on batteries and be sure to have
sleeping bags and blankets.
Mrs. Degan, P.E.: She makes sure she has plenty of food and water. She’ll also have an escape plan, meeting
place, and a phone tree to organize the notification of relatives. She’ll also have propane gas for her motor home.
Mrs. Coleman, Math: She will have a supply of extra food and water. She’ll also have solar powered flashlights
and gas in her car.
Mr. White, Math: He will have an escape plane.
Mr. Metheny, P.E. : He’ll make sure to have food and water. He will also have a plan for escape and clothes
packed outside. He will also have toys for his kids.

Ode to the 49ers
by Andrew Ayala
When one thinks about amazing, they think about the 49ers. Most of the football people know that the 49ers won
most of their games. Their win/loss record is 7-2. Most of their fans are happy that the 49ers made it to the
Superbowl, like me. I’m excited for the 49ers to beat the Baltimore Ravens—let’s see who wins!
(Editor’s note: this article was written before the Superbowl on Sunday—we’ll have Superbowl coverage in our
next issue!)

by Esli Lopez and Seth Canela
Mr. Metheny is really an interesting man because he loves the brand Nike. He also likes Mexican food and going to

He wants the Stingray to be his dream car.
He is married to Priscilla Metheny. They have been married for 7 years and they are expecting their second child
soon. It will be a boy. Mr. Metheny can also say all capitals and countries in South America in less than five
seconds.
Soccer News: America vs. Atlante
by Jose Garcia
On Saturday, January 19, 2013, America faced off versus an old rival, Atlante. This match had generated a lot of
hype before the match even gegan. The first match was exciting because there were 3 goals, all scored against
Atlante. I celebrated for America because it is my favorite team. The second half went at a slower lpace, because
there were few exciting moments, but America managed to whip in another. The team celebrated their third
consecutive win. They have won 3 out of 3 matches played. The end result was no surprise, given the fact that
Atlante has not been in the greatest form. When asked, both managers of the teams said the result was fair, given
the way the match played out.
