1a. What is the fundamental research question? What is innovative about it? How does it advance the
current state-of-the-art?
1b. What specific infrastructure is being proposed?
1c. Why is it required? How will it be used for the proposed research?
1d. Is there existing infrastructure in Ottawa or the region (i.e. Montreal-Toronto corridor), or in Canada
writ large ? If so, why can’t it be used instead?
1d. If you have previously received an award for CFI infrastructure, please explain how this proposal
will build upon previous investment (up to ½ page)

2. How does the project align to Carleton's Strategic Integrated Plan, Strategic Research Plan, as well as
Faculty Priorities? For Faculty Priorities, please speak to your Research Facilitator, Associate Dean of
Research, and/or Chair.
3a. Provide a rough estimate of the # of HQP who will benefit from the infrastructure over the next five
years – Masters, PhD, PostDoc.
3b. What skills would the HQP acquire?
4. What are the significant improvements/benefits to Canada, how will they be realized (eg
commercialization, social policy improvements) and the timeframe in which they are expected?
Quantify and reference where possible (eg the research outputs will help to prevent 2,000 premature deaths
related to smoking with a consequent saving to Canadian governments of approximately $1B over the next two
decades).

5. What are the significant improvements/benefits to Ontario, how will they be realized (eg
commercialization, social policy improvements) and the timeframe in which they are expected?
Quantify and reference where possible (eg the research outputs will help to prevent 2,000 premature deaths
related to smoking with a consequent saving to Canadian governments of approximately $1B over the next two
decades).
Please complete ONLY if planning to apply for Ontario funding as well. In order to apply for matching provincial
funds, the project needs to meet provincial priorities. You may find Ontario’s Innovation Agenda useful.
6. CFI projects receive up to 40% contributions from CFI and up to 40% from ORF. This leaves 20%
contributions needed from other sources, including but not limited to Vendor Discounts. Do you
anticipate contributions from eligible sources to help achieve the additional 20% funding needed? If so,
please outline.
For the purpose of this iLOI, contributions mean those beyond the normal educational vendor discounts on
equipment as per Section 4.8 (p21) of the CFI's Policy and Program Guide

7a. Where will the infrastructure be located?
Provide enough detail to identify which rooms you are targeting and how much space you will need to house
the equipment that you propose.
7b. Do you anticipate renovations being required (if so, provide a brief summary - eg “repaint rooms 509
and 510 Tory, and fit new security system”)?
Renovations refer to everything from tearing down a wall, to upgrading HVAC, to extra computer/electrical
outlets being required. Space must be confirmed by your Associate Dean, Research at time of submission of the
iLOI.
7c. Have you included renovation costs in your estimated request included in this iLOI?
(Yes or No)
Quality of Researcher (Question 8 – if applicable + CV)
Please attach a copy of your most recent Tri-Council (CCV, Form 100, SSHRC) or CFI CV
8. What discipline specific conventions should the review committee be aware of in reviewing your
research contributions
This could include comments regarding authorship conventions, types of publications and their value/impact in
