Approach Pilot
2. To discuss the official launch of the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (IAP)

Presenter: Daniel Hoornweg, Consultant of Sustainable Cities IAP
An overview of the GEF-6 IAPs and Sustainable Cities IAP will be provided.
The aim of the IAPs and the rationale for the GEF engagement will be discussed,
highlighting the urgency to integrate global environmental considerations and
resilience into city management through planning, design, and action. The scope
and outcome of the Sustainable Cities IAP will be presented for further
discussion.

The Sustainable Cities IAP will support a common global framework-platform
for the global coordination function. National-local level initiatives are also
expected to build on/adapt the common framework. Current ideas on the
common global framework and platform will be presented. Cooperation
opportunities with key institutions will be explored through dialogue.

Opening remarks by Rosina Bierhaum, Chairperson of STAP
Dialogue will continue, with feedbacks from the relevant GEF Agencies and
GEF Scientific and Technical Assessment Panel (STAP) on the common
framework-platform and cooperation. Discussion on the candidate coordinating
agency for the IAP will be held.

Attributes of candidate countries and cities


The Sustainable Cities IAP will incentivize a select number of country/subnational projects on a pilot basis to promote and implement integrated urban
management. The session will discuss key attributes of candidate countries and
cities for their participation in the IAP. Discussions will follow.

The GEF plans to hold an official announcement/launch of the Sustainable Cities
IAP to raise awareness about efforts to address the urbanization challenges
holistically and through partnership. Inputs on the announcement/launch
planning will be solicited.
The session will also include discussions on the upcoming Secretary General’s
Climate Summit (23 September 2014), which aims to mobilize action and
increase political will to address climate change challenges. “Cities” is one of
the areas where announcements of action initiatives are envisaged. This dialogue
will help inform the GEF announcement/launch planning and explore
partnership opportunities.

Sustainable Cities IAP Modalities and Process


The session will be tailored to discuss the proposed modalities for the
Sustainable Cities IAP, as well as the envisaged process and timeline for the IAP
