GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., July 23, 2014 – The Bengtson Center for Aesthetics and Plastic
Surgery, West Michigan’s leading plastic surgery and skin treatment center, today announced Dr.
Ryan Mitchell, BSc, MD, FRCSC, will join the Center to lead its growing body contouring practice.
Plastic surgery is often required following dramatic weight loss, frequently the result of dieting
alone or a bariatric/weight loss surgical procedure. A wide variety of post-bariatric or Body
Contouring surgical procedures remove excess sagging skin that leaves many patients selfconscious. Post-weight loss surgery helps improve the shape of the underlying support tissue of
a person’s body. The result is a more natural appearance with smoother contours of the
abdomen, arms, legs and buttock area.
Dr. Mitchell is an up-and-coming leader in the research and study of Body Contouring and
reconstructive surgery. He recently completed a prestigious Fellowship at the University of
Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he specialized in procedures to treat the after-effects of postbariatric surgery under the auspices of Dr. Peter Rubin. The majority of his patients have lost
more than 100 pounds through both surgical and medical means, and were left with a significant
quantity of excess skin around their faces, necks, upper arms, breasts, abdomens, buttocks and
thighs.

Dr. Mitchell is a native of Canada, with dual citizenship, having received his post-grad medical
degree in plastic surgery from the University of Manitoba, as well as his medical undergraduate
and bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Calgary. He chose to specialize in Body
Contouring because he is passionate about helping people who have undergone a dramatic, lifechanging experience, and wanted to be an integral part in helping these patients return to
physical health and an active lifestyle.

Dr. Mitchell is currently a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon by the Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Canada, and is Board Eligible in the United States. He has received numerous
research and teaching awards for his work. Dr. Mitchell performs the full gamut of aesthetic
plastic surgery while specializing in Body Contouring and post-weight loss procedures. He and
his wife, Melissa, have recently relocated to Grand Rapids to join Dr. Bengtson.
