Central Lakes Trust announces Tertiary Education Scholarships
Central Lakes Trust presented tertiary education scholarships to 42 young people from
within its region at an official awards function held in Cromwell today. The scholarships,
which are valued at $2,500 each, aim to assist students who will commence studies at a
New Zealand tertiary institution next year.
“This is an initiative that Central Lakes Trust introduced in 2007. Once again we are
highly impressed with the caliber of young people in our region who are planning tertiary
studies next year” Paul Allison, Chief Executive, Central Lakes Trust said.
Central Lakes Trust Chairman and former Chancellor of the University of Otago, Sir Eion
Edgar, was the guest speaker at the awards function where he shared some valuable
insights with the successful recipients and their families.
“We believe that these scholarships are highly valued by the recipients and are effective
in providing these promising youngsters with ‘a helping hand’ to reach their potential in
life”, Sir Eion said.
Since the initiative was introduced in 2007, Central Lakes Trust has awarded 194
Tertiary Education Scholarships (2007 - 13 scholarships; 2008 - 15; 2009 - 31; 2010 25; 2011 - 31, 2012 - 37 and 2013 - 42).
Eligibility for these scholarships requires applicants to be between 16 and 19 years of
age and have lived in the Central Lakes Trust region for a minimum of two years at the
time of application. The selection criteria included various factors such as the applicant’s
future aspirations, work ethic, community involvement and academic ability.
Central Lakes Trust delegates the selection of its tertiary scholarships to the five high
schools in its region. A small pool of funds is also available for eligible local students
who attend Boarding Schools south of the Waitaki.
The successful recipients, including their current school and proposed course of study in
2014, are:
