COURSE DESCRIPTION: Second of a two-semester series intended for science majors,
and required for biology and molecular biology majors; concepts of organismal biology,
population biology, diversity of biological systems, origins and adaptations of
populations within the biosphere. Lecture three hours, laboratory three hours. $45 fee
PREREQUISITE: Biology 1401, Biology 1400 with a final grade of B or better

COURSE OUTCOME COMPETENCIES:
Students will be able to:
1. Describe and identify populations from a historical perspective of life on earth.
2. Describe and categorize major groups of bacteria, Archea, Protists & Fungi.
3. Describe and categorize major invertebrate & vertebrate organisms.
4. Describe and identify plant structures, developmental processes & functions.
5. Describe and identify animal structures and their functions in relationship to
nutrition, reproduction & development, the major organ systems and concepts of
organism circulation & gas exchange processes.
6. Describe and delineate concepts of ecology & the biosphere in relationship to
organisms, populations & communities of major ecosystems.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS: Students are expected to make class attendance a
priority. All absences must be explained to the instructor who will decide whether the
missed work may be made-up. Students who miss more than 25% of the lecture/lab
days…may be dropped from the class. No make-up exams will be given, unless
arrangements are made in advance of foreseen absences. An absence will be recorded
when a student fails to return after an allowed break-time during the process of an
extended class session.
Statement on Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty: Wayland Baptist University
observes a zero tolerance policy regarding academic dishonesty. Per university policy as
described in the academic catalog, all cases of academic dishonesty will be reported and
second offenses will result in suspension from the university.

W = Withdrawal
A grade of incomplete is changed if the deficiency is made up by midterm of the next
regular semester; otherwise, it becomes "F". This grade is given only if circumstances
beyond the student's control prevented completion of work during the semester
enrolled and attendance requirements have been met.
Students shall have protection through orderly procedures against prejudices or
capricious academic evaluation. A student who believes that he or she has not been
held to realistic academic standards, just evaluation procedures, or appropriate grading,
may appeal the final grade given in the course by using the student grade appeal
process described in the Academic Catalog. Appeals may not be made for
advanced placement examinations or course bypass examinations. Appeals are
limited to the final course grade, which may be upheld, raised, or lowered at any stage
of the appeal process. Any recommendation to lower a course grade must be submitted
through the Executive Vice President/Provost to the Faculty Assembly Grade Appeals
Committee for review and approval. The Faculty Assembly Grade Appeals Committee
may instruct that the course grade be upheld, raised, or lowered to a more proper
evaluation.

CELL PHONES: There will be NO class disruptions due to cell phones. Ringers must be
turned off prior to class. If you have an emergency, quietly leave the classroom. If
disruptions occur, points may be deducted from your final grade. I f examinations or
quizzes require a calculator, bring one that is NOT integrated with your cell phone.
LABORATORY: There will be several lab exercises and lab quizzes as well as other
assignments. If you must miss a lab exercise, it should be made-up within a week ( lab
materials do not store well). Make-up exercises must be pre-arranged with the
instructor.
