WALKING HOLIDAY –‘Peveril of the Peak’, Derbyshire Dales

Friday 2 September 2016 for seven nights

The ‘Peveril of the Peak’ was bought by HF Holidays in

2010. It is just north of Ashbourne and very close to

Dovedale. It is named after the novel by Sir Walter

Scott and began life as an alehouse in the 1830s.

There are 46 bedrooms and the house is set in extensive grounds with views to the surrounding countryside. You can read more at http://www.hfholidays.co.uk/holidays/freedom-breakdovedale/accommodation.

The Derbyshire Dales are well-known for walking and much of their early popularity was due to their proximity to major urban areas of Yorkshire and

Lancashire; the famous Mass Trespass took place at

Kinder Scout, north of the house. Within just a few miles are the towns of Matlock, Bakewell and

Castleton and well-known tourist attractions such as

Chatsworth House and the ‘plague’ village of Eyam.

The walking

There will be five walking days, with one day free for local excursions; you can choose from four walks, varying in length and the amount of climbing involved. The walks will be described the previous evening and you can choose which one you would like to do. You do not have to walk if you don’t want to provided you let the leaders know.

There will be a lot of variety, from valley and riverside walks to climbing the higher peaks in the area. If you are interested in industrial archaeology, you will find much of interest. The tramway museum at Crich is not far away and the village of Cromford is one of the most interesting in Derbyshire.

Walks of Discovery are up to four miles with up to 200ft of ascent. Easier Walks (all day) are up to seven miles and up to 700ft of ascent. Medium Walks are up to ten miles and up to 1,000ft of ascent. Harder Walks are up to 12 miles and up to 1,600ft of ascent.

Accommodation and travel

The booking is for seven nights from Friday, 2 September

2016. The accommodation is all en-suite and ten of the rooms are singles. Unusually, there is no single room supplement but single rooms sell out quickly so you will need to book promptly. The price for all grades of walking is

£665

per person. The price is for full board (traditional breakfast, self-select picnic lunch, three-course evening meal, and self-serve hot drinks), guided walks and transport each day, apart from the free day.

Insurance is available at

£22.75

per person. The trip to the house will take no more than three hours, plus a stop.

We have an estimate for the cost of a coach, but this is dependent on the numbers choosing to travel this way.

If most of the party travel by coach, the price is expected to be between

£25 - £30

per person for the return journey. Please indicate on the booking form if you wish to travel by coach.

How to book

To confirm a place, please return the attached booking form with a deposit of £75 per person, together with your e-mail address or a stamped addressed envelope to: Glenda Bozwood Davies, 16 The Sycamores, Baldock, SG7 5BJ.

Tel: 01462 893787; e-mail: glenda@glendabd.plus.com. Cheques should be payable to ‘LALG’.

Your booking will be acknowledged by e-mail or, if you do not have an e-mail address, by post using the SAE you have supplied. Please retain the acknowledgment, which will tell you when the balance is due and what you need to do at that stage. Once we have more information about the price of a coach we will contact you with details.

You need to reserve a place by 14 December 2015 to guarantee the price quoted. Although you are welcome to book later, please be aware that the price may rise.

The balance is due no later than 4 July 2016 . Please enclose an A5 size stamped addressed envelope for us to send the information supplied by HF Holidays and other details, such as a list of your fellow guests and directions to the house for those who choose to make their own way there. Please also indicate any changes you wish to make to your booking, which we will try to accommodate.

Electronic Banking

Currently LALG does not have a bank account which can accept payment by BACS. This is a problem common to many voluntary organisations and is a consequence of banking law. It is being looked into and it is possible that electronic payment may be available in the future.

Cancellation charges

As a holiday company, HF has cancellation terms. These are: more than 22 days before the holiday starts you will lose your deposit; between 15 and 21 days – 50% of the full price; between eight and 14 days –

60% of the total price; seven days or fewer – 100%. Hopefully no-one will need to cancel but sadly it does happen. Please note that all your payments are to LALG and if you need to cancel more than 42 days before the holiday we may be able to return your deposit, but cannot guarantee this.

This document and the booking form are available to download from the LALG website: www.lalg.org.uk/walking holidays

Please note that this could be the last HF holiday that we take

as a group. Numbers have been falling in recent years and in

2015 only 22 LALG members chose to take the holiday.
