The university of Exeter is based in the South West
of England in the counties of Devon and Cornwall.
We are considered a medium sized university with a
population of around 18,500 students. Universities
come in shapes a sizes, a we fit in the middle, for
example the University of Buckingham has a student
population of 1,900 and the University of
Manchester over 38,000. To put into context (find
out the size of the school delivering too)
We are also a member of the Russell Group, which is
made up of 24 UK universities that excel in research
and academic teaching.

the two campuses and most students will tend to
cycle between them as well.
The St. Lukes campus, which is currently undergoing
an expansion which will allow us to have larger
teaching spaces to accommodate our growing
student numbers. Our Medical School is based at St
Luke’s, with subjects available to study including
Medicine, Medical Sciences and Medical Imaging.

All of our campuses are located close to (or within)
town and city locations which offer an range of
facilities for students to engage in.
Exeter boasts a range of attractions such as the
Princesshay and Guildhall shopping centres, Fore
Street (home to several independent shops),
Cathedral Square and the historic quayside. Exeter
has three cinemas, several swimming pools, a
bowling alley, indoor climbing centre, several art
galleries, RAMM Museum, Phoenix Arts Centre, The
BikeShed Theatre and even a dry ski slope!
Exeter is close to the coast with several beaches,
such as Exmouth and Dawlish a short journey away
and the surrounding countryside offers fantastic
views and ideal locations for long walks or cycles,
both Dartmoor and Exmoor provide excellent places
for a day out in the country.
Falmouth is the closest town to our Penryn Campus
and although smaller than Exeter is still hosts an
array of attractions such as the Falmouth Art Gallery,
Maritime Museum and quayside which is home to
several pubs and restaurants such as Rick Steins
seafood bar and the Gylly Beach café.

restaurants and bars such as 8-Bit (A gaming bar),
The Underground, and Beerwolf a pub which
features its own bookshop! Cornwall also offer a
range of interesting places for students to visit such
as the Eden Project or the Minack Theatre and
there’s always Landsend to visit!
Both Exeter and Falmouth are geared towards the
tourist industry so there is always something going
on to engage with and keep you entertained and
cultured.
Both locations have great transport links to the rest
of the UK with main line train lines to the major
cities including London, Birmingham and
Manchester.
Slide 9 – Accommodation

you also get the option to choose catered halls of
residences.
Halls of residence are a great way to meet fellow
students and form a social group and often several
hall events are run to help students engage with the
rest of residences in their block.
Our halls vary in price dependent on whether you go
catered or self catered, on-suite or non on-suite
although regardless of what type of halls you live in
your rent will include all your utility bills (such as
heating and electricity) and internet connection.
After your first year of study most students will
move into private sector accommodation either
within Exeter or Falmouth. Private sector rents can
vary depending on the location, size and quality of
the housing so it’s worth shopping around. However
the university can offer you advice and guidance on
finding suitable accommodation.

The University of Exeter has an excellent reputation
both for its research and our teaching. Many of our
academic departments are within the top 10 for
teaching for their relevant subject areas and the
university itself is ranked within the top 10 of the UK
league tables.
Our courses score highly in the National Student
Survey for student satisfaction and quality of
teaching and we pride ourselves on delivering an
excellent academic experience for all of our
students.
Slide 11 – Academic Support
None
Staff
The university is committed to providing all of its
students quality academic support throughout their
time studying with us.
All students will have a Personal Tutor, who will be
an academic who teaches on the same subject that
they are studying, allocated to them who will
oversee their studies and act as their first port of call
for any academic support that they may require.
All of our campuses have libraries which contain
academic materials such as books, journals and
media resources that you will need to conduct
5
3-4 minutes
research as part of your assignments. We even
offer an inter library transfer system so you can
request books from one campus to be sent to
another and as a student you can access our library
services online via ExeHub to request or renew items
and browse the online resources.
During term time both the Libraries at the Streatham
and Penryn campuses are open 24 hours a day whilst
the St. Luke’s library is open from 8am to 10pm, so
you have no excuse not to get your reading done!
As part of our academic support we also focus on
developing your career and employment skills with
the aim of giving you a skillset that will make you
desirable to future employers. This support could
include career focused modules that you would have
to do as part of your degree, extra curricular courses
that you can take part in such as the Exe Factor
certificate, Work placement opportunities or a year
in industry.
Slide 12 – Support Services
None
We also provide a range of support services for our
students across all of our three campuses.
Health and Wellbeing services cover both your
physical and mental health. At Exeter we encourage
students to register with the Health Centre which is
located on the Streatham campus whilst at Penryn
our ASK service can give students the addresses of
local surgeries that they can register with. We also
provide a range of advice and counselling services.
Our AccessAbility service provides support to
students with disabilities in order to allow them to
participate fully in campus activities. This may
involve providing additional academic support or
equipment that will help them with their studies or
advising students on any sources of funding support
that they may be eligible for. This support is
available to students across all of our campuses.
Residential support is also offered to students who
stay in university managed accommodation. The
residence life team looks after the wellbeing of
students in our halls and can mediate disputes as
well as offer advice and support.
Both the university and the Students Guild/FXU offer

additional support and advice units that can cover
issues such as finance, looking for accommodation
or academic support.
Fresher's week is a big part of university and events
will take place across our campuses during this time
that are designed to help you settle in and find your
feet.
Finally, for the spiritual among you our campuses are
served by a multi-faith chaplaincy team.
Slide 13 – Getting involved
None
At the University of Exeter there is plenty for you to
get involved with when you are not busy studying.
The Students’ Guild at the Streatham and St Luke’s
campuses and FXU at Penryn our are Student Unions
who’s responsibility, among other things is to
oversee the clubs and societies, organise social
events including fundraising activities and represent
the student voice within the university.
We have over 200 societies between our three
campuses for students to get involved in and they
range from the Academic, such as the Law or
Psychology Society, The intellectual such as the
Debate Society or The Green Society, the specialist
such as the Sci-Fi Society to the more abstract like
the Hide and Seek Society and the Post-Apoc
Society.
Both the Student’s Guild and the FXU offer
opportunities to get involved in volunteering and
charity events such as RAG (Raise and Give) week
and they both have their own student media, such
as our newspapers, TV and Radio stations, that
budding journalists can get involved with.
Both the Streatham and Penryn campuses have a lot
to offer students who are interested in the arts. The
Streatham campus is home to the Northcott
Theatre, which is the largest theatre in Exeter and
often shows travelling productions, plays, stand up
comedies and other theatre productions. We also
have several Drama societies ranging from Footlights
to Gilbert and Sullivan.
The Great Hall is also used as a venue for large
events such as choir and orchestra performances as
well as a live music festival. Bands such as Bombay

Bicycle Club and Reel Big Fish have performed there.
ExTunes also allows students who preform music an
opportunity to join the universities music societies
as well as give students a place to practice. We have
many music societies such as Big Band, Folk Society
and Beats & Bass to name but a few.
Penryn also has a host of musical and drama
societies to join and places like The Stanery often
see live performances.

Many events taker place across our campuses and
I’ve already mentioned some of them such as
Fresher's Week and the live music that has taken
place.
We also host many large cultural events across our
campuses such as Chinese New Year celebrations or
the Respect Festival that celebrate the diversity of
our student population and helps raise awareness of
diversity and tolerance. Other events may include
things such as FestiFAL (Penryn).
The university also hosts several Balls throughout
the academic year such as the Fresher's Ball (Penryn
& Exeter), Halloween Ball and Graduation Ball.
Both Exeter and Falmouth have a diverse Nightlife
with regular student nights that often do deals or
discounts. There are several night clubs in both
locations as well as live music venues, bars, pubs and
restaurants. Enough to cover any students needs
whether you’re a hard core raver or a hipster.
Slide 15 – Sport
None
Staff
Sport is another big focus at Exeter and we have a
variety of clubs that students can join across our
campuses regardless of your sporting ability.
Some of our teams also take part in varsity match's
that may pitch them against other academic
departments, local businesses or even professional
teams.
The university also competes in BUCS (British
University and Colleges Sports League) and this year
we finished 6th (our highest ranking).
A range of sporting facilities are available across all
of our campuses and we are constantly investing
8
money into our facilities to make sure that they are
at a professional standard. Last year we opened the
£6.5 million Russell Seal Fitness Centre on our
Streatham campus which features a state of the art
gym with 200 stations as well as an athlete
development centre.
