from Lowe's Home Improvement. We'll be starting there and heading 2.5
kilometers towards Duquesne and back). Participants will need to register by 9:00

Experiential Day November 16, 2012
Descriptions for Students
Kite Making
Make your own kite, then fly it! Students will design and build their own kites from
scratch, then compete at flying them.
Bowling
Want to learn how to bowl? Think you already know?
We will be bowling, learning from an expert, and competing with each other to see
who has a future in this sport!
Hiking
If you’ve ever gotten an urge to get out of the city for a day, you will have the opportunity
on experiential day to enjoy several outdoors activities. Hiking through the wilderness of
one of the Pittsburgh area’s parks or forests will give scientifically-inclined students the
opportunity to experience environmental science first hand, while also giving creative
thinkers a chance to contemplate the wonders of nature. Activities will include geocaching,
a hiking experience in which you and your teammates work together navigate the forest
with a personal GPS to find hidden treasures. No previous outdoors experience is required,
but curiosity is.
Toys for Tots
This option is available to any student who wants to help make a difference in the lives of
young children throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. We will work with the United
States Marines and other volunteers to collect, sort, and organize donated toys to be
given to Pittsburgh children for the Christmas holiday season.
Gallery Hop
This "Gallery Hop" is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: we will
be hopping from art gallery to art gallery in downtown Pittsburgh.
This is just about the coolest way to spend an afternoon during school
hours: viewing art that you never get to see while taking in the
sights of our beautiful city. We will be viewing art work done by
professionals and learning how their art connects with the work of
others to make one cohesive "show." Hop on along!
Behind the scenes at the zoo
Ever think of working with animals? Just curious?
This is the zoo that the general public doesn’t get to see!
Take a behind-the scenes tour of the zoo and see what it takes to care for the
animals there on a daily basis.
Primitive Instrument Making
You make it, then you play it. We will be building primitive instruments – cigar box
guitars, didley bows (electrified and amplified!), tone drums, and maybe even the
legendary ‘canjo’ - that actually sound pretty great. You may have seen Mr. Keat or
Ms. Cox playing some of these around the school. After you build an instrument (or
two), Mr. Keat can help you learn simple songs to play by yourself or with others.
And at the end of the day, you keep what you built!
Horseback
For experiential day, we will spend the day on a 180 acre horse farm. We will work
with and learn from the 30 horses living at these stables. We will learn about the
horses' behaviors, and we will observe them to learn about the animals and how
they relate to us. Our visit will be broken into stations where we will be interacting
with the horses, and we will be doing activities in small groups.
Ropes
Looking for an adventure? A challenge? A way to conquer your fears? Come join us for a
day at the Linsly Center Ropes Course. Theropes course consists of group obstacles that
are fun, challenging, and require problem solving skills. Push yourself to the limit and enjoy
a day in the outdoors at the Linsly Center ropes course.
