Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. My name is Ms. Gaither; I am extremely excited
to be your scholar’s science teacher for this academic school year. In the science lab, scholars
will practice skills for observing, investigating, designing, collaborating and presenting that will
enable them to make good decisions while working in the complex world of the 21st century
classroom.
All scholars will utilize these skills while participating in hands-on STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities. Scholars will also increase their higher
order thinking skills through the Engineering Design Process, critical thinking, applications to
real world situations, and the ability to articulate thoughts completely during group and one-onone discussions. All of these attributes are imperative for the academic success of your scholar
in the science lab.
This Science/ STEM Lab Handbook is filled with important information to guide you and
your scholar through an exciting and productive year in Science. Please review and discuss all
of its contents with your scholar and sign the front page and safety contract then return both
signed copies immediately to the science lab teacher.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Please read and review the science safety contract with your scholar. This contract must be
returned immediately to the science lab teacher before your scholar can begin to participate in
any hands-on lab activities.
I am learning to be a good scientist. I know that I must be organized, neat, and well behaved to learn
science best. I promise to
 Prepare for activities: I will listen to directions and make sure I understand them before I start.
 Care for equipment: I will handle objects carefully and put them away when I am done.
 Follow directions: I will follow the instructions of my teacher.
 Observe carefully: I will be as quiet and calm as possible so that I can learn more.
 Keep careful records: I will write down my observations.
 Clean up afterwards: I will wash my hands and clean up my workspace.
 Follow all safety rules
I will share good science safety with scholars and my family so that I can be a good investigator.
