JOB DUTIES

Treats Illnesses: A large part of a pediatrician's job involves treating illnesses.
These can be everything from everyday illnesses such as colds and strep throat,
childhood diseases such as measles, mumps and chicken pox. A pediatrician
examines the patient, orders tests if needed, analyzes test results, diagnoses
the illness and decides on a treatment plan. Makes careful notes in the
patient's chart of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

Monitors Chronic Diseases: A pediatrician also sees patients who have chronic
diseases such as juvenile diabetes and cystic fibrosis. While knows she will not be
able to cure their diseases, monitors their health and adjusts treatment as
necessary to give the patient the best possible quality of life. Also keeps informed
of new advances in treatment and considers them for inclusion in the patient's
treatment.

Tracks Growth and Development: Often, a pediatrician will care for a patient
from his infancy through his adolescence. Typically see him for well-child;
check-ups to monitor his physical growth against the norms and to check for
any potential problems. Records the child's height and weight at each annual
visit, often plotting it on a graph to track growth easily

Encourages Healthy Lifestyle: A pediatrician guides parents on how to prevent
illness through practices such as immunizations, nutrition and good hygiene.
The pediatrician discusses the child's habits and lifestyle, including sports and
other activities, to get a picture of the whole patient and to promote healthy
choices.

Communicates With Patients and Parents: The pediatric must also be able to
talk with parents, who may be emotional or stressed over their child's illness,
and make sure the parents understand both the diagnosis and the treatment.
Though her schedule is full and may feel pressured to stay on time, must take
the time to answer questions, reinforce directions and address concerns.

Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history,
reports, and examination results.

Skills
A Way with Kids
Many kids are afraid of doctors, needles, and various types of tests, so it can be
incredibly helpful if you, as a pediatrician, are good enough with kids to be able to ease
some of that anxiety when they’re being treated. Making kids laugh is often the best
way to ease that nervousness.
Socially Perceptive
As a pediatrician, you’ll likely have patients from all kinds of backgrounds, so it’s
important for you to be aware of power dynamics across race, class, and gender lines.
Be aware of the world around you and try to build a trusting environment for your
patients by acting in a welcoming manner without overstepping your bounds.
Intuition
Physicians need to be able to think quickly and have enough knowledge about illnesses
to quickly assess problems and get patients to hospitals in emergency situations. Part
of this is having good intuition to know when something is seriously wrong with a
patient or to know if the issue is just a common malady.
Observant
It’s important to not only check on the issues that patients are coming to see you
about, but to also observe anything else abnormal or different about the patient. Being
observant can help save patients’ lives, and it can also make your job a lot easier.
9
SALARY
The annual salary for someone with the job title Physician - Pediatrics may vary
depending on a number of factors including industry, company size, location, years of
