Director, Nevada Center for Applied Research
Essential Function: Sedentary Work
Description: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force
frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary
work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

The Director, Nevada Center for Applied Research is responsible for managing the Nevada
Center for Applied Research (NCAR or Center) to effectively leverage the University of Nevada,
Reno’s (UNR) physical and intellectual assets and make Nevada’s industries globally
competitive. In addition, the Director will help develop and nurture the University’s
corporate/industry relationships. The Director provides oversight of the University’s Core
Laboratories (CL), High Performance Computing Facility (HPC), and Shared Research Facility
(SRF); networks with local and regional industries; and solicits and manages industry funded
fee-for-service contracts. The Director must meet all reporting requirements of the Governor’s
Office of Economic Development (GOED), the Knowledge Fund Committee, and the Office of
the Vice President for Research and Innovation (VPRI) as they relate to the State’s Knowledge
Fund which supports NCAR.

60% - Nevada Center for Applied Research (NCAR) Management
 Implement NCAR strategic plan and goals; ensure sustainability of the Center, which
includes attracting local, regional and national industry to utilize the physical (laboratory
infrastructure, centers, institutes) and intellectual (faculty, staff, students) assets of the
University
 Provide leadership in initiating and nurturing corporate relationships, and help faculty
establish collaborations with the industry
 Interact with GOED regarding NCAR activities; ensure adherence to GOED and
Knowledge Fund needs and initiatives
 Ensure NCAR deliverables are met and that work conducted with Knowledge Fund
resources is on schedule and within cost

Direct the compilation of data and creation of reports regarding NCAR activities; review
data and oversee the delivery of reports to the State of Nevada Knowledge Fund
Committee, GOED, and the VPRI
Collaborate with AVP-EI and the Associate Vice President for Research (AVPR) to
enhance the research enterprise at the University and elevate the competitiveness of
faculty and staff
Work with faculty and staff to ensure deliverables and performance indicators are met on
all contracts implemented by NCAR
Hire, train, supervise, discipline, and terminate (if necessary) NCAR staff; assign and
review work; provide direction to meet objectives and responsibilities of the Center
Collaborate with AVP-EI and the AVP-R to secure extramural funding from industry
Solicit and secure projects and contracts to be conducted in the University’s CL, SRF,
and HPC
15% - Shared Research Facility (SRF) Oversight
 Oversee the University’s Shared Research Facility; ensure sustainability
 Supervise the Coordinator, SRF; provide direction to meet the objectives and
responsibilities of the Office of Enterprise and Innovation; encourage professional
development through training, seminars, and committee service
 Work closely with SRF faculty and laboratory managers to determine facility abilities and
needs
 Maintain a competitive research infrastructure that will enable the University’s faculty,
staff, and students to excel in their research, creative, scholarly, and entrepreneurial
endeavors
20% - Outreach and Marketing
 Initiate, enable, and nurture corporate relationships.
 Solicit industry funded fee-for-service contracts
 Actively network with and provide outreach to local and regional industries
 Internal and external marketing of University laboratory capabilities and services
5% - Special Projects
 Complete special projects as assigned by the VPRI and the AVP-EI

The Director, Nevada Center for Applied Research works independently with minimal oversight
to manage the operations of the NCAR. The incumbent leads efforts to create partnerships and
maintain relationships with local, national, and international organizations who utilize and
leverage the University’s physical and intellectual assets.

The Director, Nevada Center for Applied Research works closely with Vice President for
Research and Innovation (VPRI) to establish goals relating to the operations of the NCAR. The
Director works collaboratively with the AVP-EI to achieve the shared vision and the mission of

the Offices of Enterprise & Innovation. Arrangements and agreements must first be discussed
with the AVP-EI and the VPRI prior to establishment.
