Many an afternoon, Dad and I, would sit waiting for the
pigeons to arrive. Like all pigeon fanciers we would wonder
how we would fare that day. After clocking, we would ring
Allan (Turner), and then would ring Stephen to find out how
we went, this would be the ‘acid test. ‘ If we clocked around
his time, we would have a reasonable result.
Over the years, due to Dad’s failing health, and my chronic
PFL, the birds would only have one toss a week and were
raced every fortnight. On average, we gained 4 to 5 Club
wins, a Diamond Valley Centre win, and a couple of
Federation positions. It might seem that we had low
expectations, but not a bad result for a pair of old crocks.
During the breeding season of 1999/2000, we received from
my brother Stephen a skinny roached back late bred unrung
black chequered cock. Dad being hard on his pigeons, tossed
him, still squeaking, prior to the 2000 racing season. He
survived and was placed into the stock loft. We called him
the ‘blue ring cock 00’. He was bred off Stephen’s imported
Casaerts. Around this time, we acquired some old Kearsey
and Honig blood lines from Ken McCall in Geelong. From
these came a ‘Blue Bar Hen Geelong 94- 0773’, she was
clocked 5 times over three years with top positions into
Geelong for Ken. From then on, she was called the ‘McCall
Hen’ these two pigeons became our foundation pair.
