Spring 2015
PROJECT: Debate: The Internet
Over the next week we will be working on a “presentational” and ”interpersonal” project about the
Internet. You will be asked to create a presentation on how the Internet has influenced the lives of
Stevenson students (including yourself). Then you will participate in an in-class debate the relative
advantages and disadvantages of the Internet to Stevenson students.
You will perform three tasks:
TASK ONE (INDIVIDUAL): VOICETHREAD PRESENTATION:
This is a “presentational” project. You will create use the website Voicethread to create a
presentation talking about how the Internet has influenced the lives of Stevenson students (including
yourself). You also must make a substantial peer comment on at least one other person’s Voicethread.
This presentation is due by Monday 4/6.
The assessment criteria are as follows:
Answer the following prompts in your presentation:
1) 网络怎么影响史蒂文森学生的生活?
2) 你怎么用网络?用什么网站/软件?为什么?
3) 你认为网络对史蒂文森学生的影响是弊大于利,还是利大于弊?
A high-quality presentation:
 Should answer all prompts in detail
 Should talk about different functions of the Internet
 Should clearly state your reasoned opinion about the benefits/harms of the Internet
 Should have at least 10 slides with appropriate pictures/videos
 Should be at least 7 minutes long (CLEAR audio commentary)
 Should use the advanced vocabulary and grammar we’ve learned
Peer Comment:
 Make a comment at least one minute long replying to a classmate’s Voicethread Presentation (you
will be assigned a classmate)
 This comment should agree or disagree with the classmate’s opinion
TASK TWO (INDIVIDUAL): IN-CLASS DEBATE:
 We will have a full-period in-class debate on Wednesday, April 8th on this question:
网络对史蒂文森学生的影响是是利还是弊?
 There will be two teams (pro and con), with a defined role for each person (see details below)
 Chinese students will be invited to judge the team winner of the debate as well as the debate MVP
 Rehearsal and preparation is paramount for a successful debate
 You will be graded individually for your debate performance, not on the performance of your
team
GRADING:
This project counts as 10% of your overall grade for the winter term (5% for the Voicethread
presentation; 5% for the debate). Be sure to study the following scoring rubric which the teacher will use
to grade your performance. Preparation and rehearsal are vital to receiving a high score.
