Submission Instructions
Please ensure that we receive the following material by April 1 at Noon:
1. The first two pages of this document, completed.
2. A list of principal activities, no longer than two pages. You might include sections for the
following: Research Experience, Conference Presentations, Grants and Awards, Leadership, Service,
Athletics, Publications, Employment, Interests. There is no required format for this list, but we
suggest that you only include principal activities (i.e., activities of substance that you’d be happy to
talk more about in an interview) and that you say enough about each activity to make it clear why
you’ve included it (i.e., the significance of the award, the impact of the research, etc.).
3. An autobiography of no more than 500 words. There is no required format for this, but you might
approach this as a way to highlight aspects of your story that might be unique when compared to
other applicants.
4. A statement of no more than 500 words that in whatever way you prefer incorporates the answers
to the following questions:
a. How do you hope to contribute positively to the world? What has motivated you to pursue
this mission?
b. What are your most extraordinary leadership, professional, service and/or athletic
achievements, and (more importantly) how have they shaped the way you think?
c. What are you interested in studying with the Rhodes/Marshall Scholarships?
d. How will the Rhodes/Marshall Scholarship experience contribute to your future goals?
5. Two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from someone who has taught you in a class.
The other letter must be from someone who can attest to at least one of your extraordinary
leadership, professional, service, and/or athletics achievements. You can tell your recommenders that
these letters are for the university endorsement; they will have the opportunity to revise their letters
before the final deadlines, if you are endorsed.
By April 1, please send a single email to fellows@nd.edu with items 1-4. Each numbered item should
be a separate attachment. The recommendation letters (item 5) should be sent directly to
fellows@nd.edu from the recommenders. If they would prefer to submit their letters as hard copies, they
can send them to the following address:
CUSE National Fellowships
University of Notre Dame
110 Brownson Hall
Notre Dame, IN 46556-5601
Selected applicants will be invited to interview for the university endorsement in mid-to-late April. More
information about this will be forthcoming. If you are endorsed, then we will continue to work with you
throughout the summer to prepare your final application for submission by the end of September.
