ELEMENTS TO BE DETERMINED FROM ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES AFTER HF-HClO4
DIGESTION
The following requirements are defined for tailings samples, lake sediment samples, marine sediment samples from
brackish marine environment and other environmental samples. Tailings samples, lake sediment samples and
marine sediment samples used for geochemical studies from brackish marine environment are to be freeze-dried,
and sieved to <2 mm size fraction before total dissolution with hydrofluoric – perchloric acid, or for mercury with
concentrated nitric acid extraction (total digestion). Sediment samples also have to be measured for weight before
and after freeze drying, to be reported. For marine sediment samples, additionally as a measure of analytical quality
the SRM:s MESS-2 (or MESS-3) and NIST8704 are to be analyzed at least once in every sample batch.
Table provides the list of elements detection limits (attention, not theoretical detection limits for blank
samples but practical detection limits as valid for the whole rock samples and evaluated from the
duplicates!) that should be reached.
Minimum list of elements to be determined with detection limits and fields to be filled in. Minimum
criteria: at least 90 % of the concentrations of all the listed elements will be determined with detection
limit (or better).
