UAA Student Health & Counseling Center
Did You Know?
The SHCC electronic medical record continues to be improved by Medicat, and will offer significant
improvements by updating the medical record portion of the Practice Management system. The Medicat
superuser group at the SHCC continues to meet regularly and make progress in the revision and
implementation of this essential record keeping and practice management application.
Bette Fenn has been attending Student Voice survey webinars to improve our department assessment
tools.
Accomplishments
Pam Hayden attended a seminar entitled: How to Communicate with Tact and Professionalism.
Bette Fenn attended the Alaska Association of Family Practice Physician’s: Winter Update 2009.
Physical Health providers: Melanie Pergiel, Theresa Schmitz-Waite, Betty Bang, Mary Woodring and Laura
Romberg attended the 2 day STD update, sponsored by the University of Washington.
Bette Fenn and Michele Bach attended the student health insurance carrier; United Healthcare, seminar in
Plano, TX, to review benefits provided to UAA students, and to advocate for improvements.

Student Union & Commuter Student Services
Did You Know?
During March, over 142 bookings with a combined total of 650 reservation hours were held in the Student
Union.
The Spring Desk Audits have been completed showing an average daily use of the building of
approximately 600 students Sunday to Saturday. Student Union Info Desk handles an average of 44 walk
up customers per hour.
Crickett Watt, Eddy Ozoma and Olya Semiryazhko all took part in the Student Affairs Conference and the
StrengthsQuest questionnaire.
Accomplishments
SU staff members, Jessica Allman, a double major in English and French, and Renata Ballesteros-Lopez,
an Honors College student with a double major in German and International Studies, were both awarded
Congress Bundestag scholarships.
SU staff member Rebbecca Luna received a scholarship from the Chief Manuelito Scholarship Fund. This
scholarship was established in 1980 to provide scholarships to high achieving Navajo high school
graduates.
SU staff member Cynthia Abam was selected to the NIDDK Summer Education Program for
Underrepresented Persons (STEP-UP) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Upcoming Activities
April 4 Spring Outdoor Gear Swap - 10am Student Union Café.
The Student Union group process for hiring 09/10 school year managers takes place on April 4. This is a
five hour process to find student leaders interested in continuing to make the Student Union an inviting
place for all students.
Late Nights in the Student Union start on April 20. The Student Union stays open until 1am and offers
free nutritious food and coffee while providing a welcoming environment conducive to studying for final
exams.

Accomplishments
Assistant Director of Student Conduct Michael Votava finished writing a new policy regarding student
holds.
Assistant Director of Student Conduct Michael Votava finished revising the Student’s Rights, Freedoms,
and Responsibilities section of the Fact Finder.
Assistant Director of Student Conduct Michael Votava attended a webinar and workshop to learn about
amendments to the Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act.
Assistant Director of Student Conduct Michael Votava is designing a Care Network, a new database to
track students of concern. The purpose of the Care Network is to promote student safety.
Assistant Director of Student Conduct Michael Votava is collaborating with International Student Advisor
Doni Williams to develop more strategies to better inform international students about UAA’s Student
Code of Conduct.
Career Services Center
Did You Know?
If your department has an event that is career or employment related, the Career Services Center would
like to know about it, so that CSC can inform employers or students with helpful information.
CSC has contact with employers who would like to reach students with information on internships or
careers within their company. CSC would like to collaborate with professors in order to have these
employers visit appropriate classes for the benefit of UAA students and departments.
UAA’s Career Services Center is the largest university career center in the state of Alaska, housing a
resource library, the athenaeum, of over 1000 books to meet career information needs and six
computers for student use. The athenaeum is available to students for study and research, but is also a
great place to hang-out and take a break.
Accomplishments
Career Services has placed students in the following companies this year for internships; ConocoPhillips,
Merrill Lynch, Alyeska Pipeline, CH2M Hill, DOWL, McKinley Capital, ANTHC, Air Force Audit Agency,
Thomas, Head, and Greisen, US Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska Air National Guard, Veterans Health
Administration, and Kachemak Bay Natural Estuarine Research Reserve.
On March 27 Career Services hosted the Annual City-wide Career & Job Fair in collaboration with the
Anchorage Chamber of Commerce and the Anchorage School District. The fair was held in the Wells Fargo
Sports Complex with over 75 businesses represented and was open to the community. This event
occurred from 10am to 4pm. This was one of largest and well attended career fairs in the State of Alaska
for the 2009 year!
On March 31 a third and final lecture from the semesters lecture series was given on Health Care
Opportunities in Alaska and support of these opportunities through programs at UAA. This lecture was
planned by Career Services and held at the Athenaeum Library.
Upcoming Activities
April 9 Career Services will be hosting the first Health Care Expo for students interested in health career
opportunities and programs at UAA. There will be over forty employers recruiting and UAA program
representatives hosting tables at the event. The Health Care Expo will be in the Student Union from 10am
to 3pm.
April 27 - May 1 Career Services will have free coffee and cookies for UAA students during Finals week.
This will be held from 8am to 5pm in the Career Services Center Athenaeum Library.
Department of Residence Life
Did You Know?
The Department of Residence Life’s recruitment for Resident Advisors and Peer Mentors for fall 2009 is
underway; the Department conducted returning student staff interviews the week of March 16-20.
Interviews begin for new student staff March 30-April 3.
Accomplishments
North Hall staff hosted a Pirate Party themed dance on March 20 in the Commons from 9pm to midnight.
This dance was a fun and safe way for students to have fun on a Friday night. There were 50 residents
who attended the dance.
On March 17, in celebration of St. Patricks Day, the Sustainability Collateral hosted a “Green Party” in the
Commons dining area. Offered as an alternative to energy drinks or regular sodas were samples of
flavored waters and natural sodas. Many different types of natural and organic snacks were out on dining
tables for students to snack on and over 40 prizes were given away to students who answered questions
correctly about sustainability, sustainable practices here at UAA, recycling, and energy conservation. The
local band, Mud Puppy, performed and a great time was had by all!
Upcoming Activities
North Hall Council has put forth a plan for the North Hall 3rd floor lounge. Their plan consists of
purchasing motivational posters, bookshelves, and other educational materials to transform the 3 rd floor
lounge into a library/study session environment.
The Sustainability Collateral is connecting with various local agencies to arrange for pick-ups at each hall
for left behind or donated usable items such as clothing, small appliances, books, and movies. This is
being arranged to take place during closing/check-out week.

The Concert Board Coordinator also is the Bartlett Lecture Series Coordinator? Bartlett Lecture Series
worked to bring New York Times bestselling author Chuck Klosterman to UAS, UAF, and UAA for the
statewide Bartlett Lecture Series. The Student Activities team supported the program providing ushers,
ticket takers, greeters, and mic monitors for the lecture.
The Campus Programming Board is already identifying and planning next year's Homecoming.
USUAA is seeking a fee increase for the student government fee? UAA students will vote to either
maintain the current student government fee structure ($1 per credit starting at 3 credits with a cap at
$12) or raise the fee through one of two options: a $12 flat fee assessed to all students taking 3 credits or
more or raising the fee to $2 per credit starting at 3 credits with a cap at $24.
The 2009-10 edition of the UAA Fact Finder was completely edited through a paperless, sustainable
practice by using new software? Thanks to all individuals, departments, and offices that submitted great
new sections for this edition.
Thirty-five student presentations will be made at this year’s Student Showcase. The conference is
celebrating its 25th anniversary and the awards luncheon will feature Vic Fischer, delegate to the Alaska
Constitutional Convention and UAA professor emeritus.
USUAA has surveyed over 1500 students within this academic year using the Student Voice assessment
tool. USUAA has gathered student opinion and feedback on important issues ranging from need-based
financial aid to recycling trends.
The two newest clubs on campus are Heifer International Club and Dental Hygienists of the Future.
In the spirit of March Madness and the great success of the women’s basketball team, Greek Council
sponsored a Rock, Paper, Scissor tournament.
Accomplishments
Twelve students have been named as recipients of Leadership Honors for spring 2009. Recipients will be
recognized by their crimson cords at Commencement in May and will be celebrated in special reception on
April 29.
The Human Services Club raised almost $600 for the Emmonak Women’s Shelter. Even with volcanic ash,
they were able to hold a very fun Chili Challenge. They are planning on doing it again next year with
hopes of even a bigger turnout.
Sigma Tau Delta hosted the annual Pacific Rim Conference on Literature and Rhetoric. This three-day
conference included guest speakers and gave UAA students a chance to present their work. Club Council
helped sponsor a networking social that they held to give students a chance to network with professionals
in their field.
The AE Club hosted a Bachelor Auction to raise money for their annual Habitat for Humanity trip. They
raised over $3000.
The UAA Concert Board’s March 28 concert featuring Brand New and The Get Up Kids was cancelled due to
Mt. Redoubt. Refunds for UAA Student tickets began Monday, March 30 at the office of Student Life &
Leadership in the Student Union Rm. 218. Students need to bring their tickets and UAA ID to collect their
refund. Refund hours are Monday thru Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
The Campus Programming Board hosted a Spring Women's fashion show in the Student Union on March
27. A sell out audience of over 250 people attended the event.
Student Activities hosted an eclectic line up of six events between March 20 and 26 including the Banff
Film Festival (2 nights), Spilljoy Poetry Ensemble, an accappella concert by Grammy nominees The Bobs,
a noon music jazz event, and a gallery opening of a 3-D show. Additionally, Student Activities lent major
event help to the Programming Board's fashion show and The Bartlett Lecture Series. Student Activities
sponsored or supported events served over 2600 patrons in a ten day period.
The Bartlett Lecture Series presented Chuck Klosterman on Monday, March 30. His lecture drew an
audience of 500+ to the Wendy Williamson. Chuck spoke about his life and the events that lead to the
publication of his 5 books. Chuck also met with a JPC class and discussed different tips the students
should consider as they head to graduation and the start of their career.
Upcoming Activities
The Philosophy Club is sponsoring their 4th annual Philosophy Conference on April 17-18.
Psi Chi and the Psychology Club are planning the annual Behavioral Science Conference of the North
(BSCN). This event will be held in late April.
The AE Club will be holding a Texas Style Chili-Feed on April 23 to raise funds for their Habitat for
Humanity trip in May.
Student Activities hosts comedian Dan Adhoot on April 3 in the Student Union Den at 8 pm. Admission is
free for UAA students with a current id taking six credits or more. All others can get tickets at the door for
$10.
The Concert Board is proud to present comedian Brian Posehn on April 24 at 7:30pm in the Wendy
Williamson. Tickets for this event will be sold at UAAtix.com.
