First Grade News

Hot Off the Press…
We have some very exciting learning experiences
coming our way in February! This is Dental Health
Month. We will learn about how to keep our teeth
healthy and clean. Also this month, we will celebrate
the 100th day of school and Valentine’s Day. While we
won’t be having parties on these days, we will have fun
learning activities integrated into our subject areas and
homework. More information on these projects will
come home in the homework packets this month. New
this school year: Loudoun County has implemented a
mandatory policy regarding candy given with valentines:
In keeping with current practices designed to
protect the health and safety of all children,
elementary students in Loudoun County Public Schools
are not permitted to distribute candy or other food
items to classmates. As Valentine’s Day
approaches, it is important for parents to
understand that candy brought to school by
students, including candy attached to Valentine’s
Day cards, will be returned to the parent."
In math, we have been working on our addition timed
fact tests. Please be sure that you are helping your
child commit addition facts to 18 to memory.
Flashcards are a great way to practice these facts. Our
first grade web site also has links that can be another
resource to assist you with this.

There is an exciting new educational website we
would like to share with you! BrainPOP creates
animated, curriculum-based content that engages
students, supports educators, and bolsters
achievement. The award-winning online educational
resources include BrainPOP Jr. (K-3), BrainPOP,
BrainPOP Español, and BrainPOP ESL. Children can
search for units of study and participate in a variety
activities pertaining to these content areas such as
viewing videos, playing games, and reading and writing
about them. To visit this website with your child, go
to www.brainpopjr.com. User name is “hutchisonf”
and the password is “farm”. The website will be
accessible only until 5:30pm on a daily basis. Be sure
to check it out!
