THE UCT/CSIR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
Applications are invited for a limited number of scholarships for South African students who will register in 2015 at the
University of Cape Town for the Honours, Master’s and Doctoral degrees, within the following disciplines, or in closely related
disciplines, as shown below:
Science

Earth Systems Modelling

High Performance Computing
Health Science

Biomaterials

Diagnostic Services
Engineering

Electrical Engineering

Materials Science

Energy Systems Engineering
AWARD AND APPLICATION DETAIL
Eligibility:
 Only South African citizens and permanent residents who will register as full-time students in one (or more) of the areas
of study shown above are eligible.
 Students who are employed full-time (more than 20 hours per week) are NOT eligible for these scholarships.
 Particular consideration will be given to equity,
 It is important to note that successful candidates will not be permitted to hold a CSIR scholarship concurrently with any
NRF award.
Value and tenure of Awards:
 Honours – R85,000 per annum, tenable for ONE year only;
 Masters – R95,000 per annum, tenable for one year, but renewable for ONE further Year, dependent on satisfactory
academic progress - (Maximum tenure 2 years), and
 Doctoral – R110,000 per annum, tenable for one year, but renewable for TWO further years, dependent on
satisfactory progress – (Maximum tenure 3 years).
Please Note: Renewals are NOT guaranteed and will depend on the availability of funds and academic progress.
Criteria:
 Academic Merit - The Scholarships will be granted on the basis of academic merit, and applicants must have achieved
at least 60% for their final undergraduate majors or the Honour’s degree.
Area of study - Only students who will register for study in one (or more) of the areas of study shown above will be considered.
Applications from individuals who will study outside of these areas will not be considered.
Application Procedure:
1. A completed UCT/CSIR Application Form available from the Postgraduate Funding Office or from URL:
http://www.uct.ac.za/apply/funding/postgraduate/applications/
2. Master’s and Doctoral students are required to submit 2 letters of reference from academics who have taught/supervised the them
in the past three years
3. All original or certified copies of university transcripts (do not include certificates), including those of the applicant’s undergraduate
degree(s).
4. Proof of acceptance of the student into the proposed academic department, in the form of a brief letter/statement from the Course
Convenor or Supervisor, or an official offer of place.
5. Master’s and Doctoral applicants - A copy of the applicant’s abstract of the proposed study (no longer than ONE A-4 page) and an
indication that a Supervisor has been secured and that the research proposal has been accepted by the Department.
6. Applicants must be prepared to enter into a contract with the CSIR in which the student undertakes to enter into employment with
the CSIR for at least the tenure of the scholarship held, provided that suitable vacancies exist within the CSIR.
7. Short-listed Applicants must be prepared to undergo interviews with officials from the CSIR.

SEALED ENVELOPES or they must be emailed to pgfunding@uct.ac.za by no later than 30 March 2015.

Provide proof that you have or will be accepted by the relevant academic department at UCT.
8.
Master’s research and PhD Candidates must submit a summary/abstract of an approved research proposal, or a proposal that
has been tentatively accepted. The proposal must be no longer than 1 A4 sheet.
