Department scholarships are awarded to social work majors and pre-majors based on academic performance,
campus and/or community service, and financial need. Please provide all information requested on this form, sign,
attach a letter of application with details specified for awards, and attach a current unofficial copy of your
transcript. Make sure to include all necessary information specific to the scholarship(s) you are applying for.
Completed scholarship applications and materials are due to our office by the published deadline each spring
semester. This year applications are due by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014. Completed applications
should be submitted in hard copy to the Department of Social Work office, TN 358.

2) Attend the free MSU, M scholarship banquet in Fall 2013; and,
3) Submit to the Department of Social Work by May 1st, a copy of the thank you letter that I will send to the
donors of the scholarship awarded.

Social Work Scholarship Application Instructions
1) Letter of Application: Please attach a formal letter of application (not more than two pages in length) in
which you address the following topics:

A statement of your community and campus activities including approximate dates of involvement and any
leadership responsibilities. Activities could include paid work, volunteer service, organizational involvement,
or internships that highlight skills, knowledge, and/or values of the social work profession.

A description of the quality of your academic achievements, providing information that will help us
understand your past performance and your potential in the field of social work. This section might highlight
particular skills or achievements in social work or related courses, and include writing and communication
skills, or other relevant academic achievement.

A brief statement of the financial need you anticipate during the coming academic year, whether or not you
receive federal financial aid;
Special considerations to address for some awards:

If applying for the Sandee Scholarship, you should also describe your potential for contribution and
leadership as a student from a minority group planning a social work career.*

If applying for the Mindy (Hawkins) Thielges Memorial Scholarship, you should also describe your interests
in working with the elderly, especially in skilled nursing facilities, and how you are preparing to work with
this population through specialized course work, volunteer activities, and practicum placements. Scholarship
committee will verify practicum placement prior to award.*

If applying for the Dr. Jane Ann Roberts Memorial Stipend, you should also describe your interests in
working with the elderly and how you are preparing to work with this population through specialized course
work, volunteer activities. Describe your plan for completing a practicum placement within the field of
gerontological social work. Scholarship committee will verify practicum placement prior to award.*

If applying for the MSW Capstone Scholarship, you should provide a brief narrative describing how your
Capstone Project contributes to the knowledge base of the profession and creates change at your practicum
agency or broader society. Attach a copy of your approved Capstone Proposal.*
*These awards may only be given to a student awardee one time each.
